ANNAPOLIS, Md. - It was a must-win situation for American University volleyball, and senior leader
Helena Elbaek made sure that's exactly what happened. Elbaek's 20-kill performance powered the Eagles (4-3) to a 3-1 win on the road at Navy (4-1) by scores of 13-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23.
NOTABLE
- The Eagles' record is good enough for the fourth and final spot in next weekend's Patriot League Championships which will be hosted by Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y.
- American will face top-seeded Colgate at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 2 in the PL Semifinals. The winner will advance to Saturday's 3 p.m. championship match.
- Elbaek made it her second double-double of the season, adding 10 digs to her match-high 20 kills. She hit .224 and totaled 21 points by getting two block assists.
- Sophomore Zeynep Uzen had her best match of the year with 12 kills, hitting .320 and serving up a career-tying four aces.
- Senior Chiara Bosetti led the Eagles with 13 digs, and freshman Tyra Areskoug recorded a double-double by adding 11 digs to a match-best 38 assists.
- Junior Carlie Fikse was strong at the net with four blocks and seven kills, hitting .308 for the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mids had taken down American in straight sets just four days ago, and their performance in the first set suggested it could happen again as they forced the Eagles into a negative hitting percentage in a 25-13 set win.
- After posting only four kills in the opening set, American exploded for 14 kills in the second with half of those coming from Elbaek. The Eagles pulled away after the midway point of the set and won 25-17.
- The third set saw American trailing 21-17 before an incredible 8-0 run to end the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Sophomore Ally DeGaray served out that final stretch, recording one ace.
- The Eagles let three match points slip away after taking a solid lead at the end of the fourth set, but fittingly it was Elbaek's 20th kill of the night to end things with a 25-23 win.
UP NEXT
- American will face top-seeded Colgate at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 2 in the PL Semifinals. Colgate is hosting all three games of the tournament, which features No. 2 Holy Cross and No. 3 Army West Point in the other semifinal. The winners will advance to Saturday's 3 p.m. championship match.
