WASHINGTON - Senior Night had a celebratory beginning but a disappointing ending for American University volleyball, with the Eagles (2-3, 2-3 PL) losing in straight sets to Navy (3-0, 3-0 PL) in the final home match of the season. The Mids won by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-18 as AU uncharacteristically struggled on its attack.

NOTABLE

• Carlie Fikse and Asli Celikkol posted five kills each, with Fikse hitting a team-best .364.
• AU's leader in kills was Helena Elbaek with six on her Senior Night, and fellow senior Chiara Bosetti recorded a match-best 17 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• In Navy's return to competition after a lengthy pause, the Mids showed no signs of rust with a strong attack that hit .308 for the night while AU's only positive hitting percentage came in the third set to finish at .054.
• The Mids also dominated on the block, finishing with nine team blocks compared to just one for the Eagles.
• The final tie of both the first and second sets came at 7-7 before Navy pulled away. The Mids committed just seven total hitting errors in the two sets combined, while AU had 17.
• The Eagles seemed to recover well after a particularly difficult second set, gaining a 3-0 lead and later leading 12-10. 
• AU stayed within striking distance and was down just two at 19-17 before a 4-0 Navy run.

• The Eagles will play at Loyola Maryland at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26, and will play at Navy at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 28.
