WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team had a dominant start to its 2021 spring campaign on Sunday, March 14, with a 4-0 shutout against Bucknell at Jacobs Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a well-rounded effort across the board for the Eagles, starting on offense with four players contributing to the final score sheet. Senior Noor Coenen, juniors Aidan Rossman and Josie Formica, and sophomore Abby Kreider scored a goal each while Coenen also added a pair of assists for four points.
- Freshman goalkeeper Bryn Underwood made her AU debut with a starting role in the cage and came away with one save.
- The Eagles' backline made tough work for the Bison, holding them to only two shots on the day.
- Freshman goalkeeper Bryn Underwood started in the cage for her first game in the AU uniform, and picked up her first career shutout after saving Bucknell's only shot on goal during the game.
- Bucknell goalkeeper Peyton Fischer picked up six saves against 14 shots in her 60 minutes.
- American led in total shots, 14-2, shots on goal, 10-1, and had seven corners to Bucknell's one late in the game.
- The Eagles controlled the tempo from the start, opening with three shots and two penalty corner opportunities in the first quarter. They weren't quite able to convert on those opportunities, though, and entered the second stanza even at 0-0.
- American continued to push coming out of the huddle, earning an early penalty corner but Fischer came away with the save to keep the score knotted.
- AU landed on the scoreboard midway through the quarter with its fourth penalty corner when a deflection from Formica found the back of the cage after an assist from Coenen and insertion from junior Georgia Davies.
- The Eagles wasted little time to get back on the board in the second half, capitalizing on another penalty corner opportunity to build a 2-0 advantage. This time, it was an insertion from senior Gaby de Kock that found Coenen at the top of the circle, and Rossman finished with the well-timed deflection.
- American had one more look at goal during the quarter but the shot from Rossman was saved, and the two teams entered the final 10 minutes at 2-0.
- After feeding in the assists for both AU goals, Coenen finally found the back of the net herself four minutes into the fourth quarter, capitalizing after an errant pass from Bucknell in the midfield.
- Kreider closed out the scoring for the day five minutes later, picking up a loose ball in front of the cage and knocking in the low shot.
