LEWISBURG, Pa. - The American University field hockey team controlled the game offensively, but struggled to find the back of the cage and fell to Bucknell in double overtime on Sunday, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Julia Kraft picked up her first goal of the season, second of her career, late in the second half to tie the game at 1-1 and send the two teams into overtime. Classmate Abby Kreider sent in the assist after a penalty corner shot from senior Noor Coenen was blocked.
- Coenen had 11 of AU's 23 shots, including five on goal, while Bucknell had only nine shots on the day.Â
- The Eagles also led in penalty corner opportunities, closing with 13, including 11 in the second half and one during the first period of overtime.
- Freshman goalkeeper Bryn Underwood closed with a career-high four saves in her 79 minutes of play.
- After a scoreless first half, Bucknell was first to get on the board in the third quarter when a long shot from outside the circle by Noor Kaur was deflected in by Olivia Bush.Â
- The Eagles responded with a good offensive push, drawing a penalty corner opportunity but the shot from Coenen went just wide of the cage to close the stanza.
- AU opened the fourth quarter with four penalty corners within the first five minutes, but couldn't get past Bucknell's back line as the Bison came away with two saves, including one from defender Kaelyn Long.
- American continued to push offensively, though, picking up four more penalty corners and three shots before Kraft put one away after Kreider knocked in the ball during a scuffle in front of goal with just under five minutes left in regulation.
- Bucknell had one more look on goal that was blocked before the quarter ended, sending the game into extra time at 1-1.
- The Eagles continued to control on the offensive end in the first 10 minutes of overtime, putting up a pair of shots and earning one penalty corner while the Bison failed to get a good look at goal.
- Davies nearly ended the game at the 76 minute mark with a nice look at goal but Bucknell goalkeeper Clara McCormick came away with the save. The Bison responded with the game's final offensive push, as Kaelyn Long sent in a long shot to find Leah Fogelsanger for the deflection.Â
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH STEVE JENNINGS...
"Bucknell played a really hard fought game. They were very determined and passionate from the start and I think that basically set the tempo for the game early on and in the end, even though we had a lot of statistical domination in terms of shots, we didn't really have a good grasp of the game. And obviously when they scored we had to chase the game, and at that point I think we really turned it on and started playing excellent hockey, but I think we were really reactive and waited until we were down before we started playing our true game."
