Men’s Soccer Advances to Patriot League Title Game with Resounding Victory

WASHINGTON – Facing off against Navy for the second time in six days, the result remained the same for American University men's soccer on Tuesday afternoon. Answering every Navy punch with a counterpunch of their own, the Eagles advanced to the Patriot League Championship for the second season in a row with a 4-2 win.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Mattias Cooper came off the bench to register three assists in just 35 minutes of action. It's the first time an AU men's soccer player has had three assists in a game since Max Holdsworth on Sept. 11, 2016 vs. Cornell.
  • Max Wright and Evan Schweickert both scored their first career goals in the first half.
  • The Eagles advanced to the Patriot League Championship for the second season in a row and are looking to repeat as PL champions for the first time in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 11th minute, David Coly netted his seventh goal of the season after Ethan Boyle sent a service into the box that Navy couldn't clear. Coly turned and fired to the far post for the 1-0 lead.
  • Wright found the back of the net on a graceful header in the 37th minute. Cooper sent a ball out wide to Nevin Baer who sent the ball in high just in front of the keeper for Wright's header.
  • Navy responded in the 42nd minute with a penalty kick goal from David Jackson.
  • With time winding down in the first half, Schweickert blasted a goal to the top right corner off an initial shot attempt from Cooper to put AU on top 3-1 heading into halftime.
  • The Mids came out of the locker room looking to draw even with their season on the line. On a corner kick taken by Jackson, Jacob Williams rose high to put a header home to put Navy within one on the scoreboard.
  • American's defense held strong before Boyle gave the Eagles some breathing room in the 75th minute. A strong chain of passes led to Cooper sending a beautiful ball ahead to Boyle who slid the ball all the way across to the far post for the final goal of the day.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Four goals in a game are the most for an AU side since winning 5-2 against Cornell on Sept. 11, 2016.
  • The Eagles have now won four straight matches and are unbeaten in six straight dating back to Oct. 16.
  • Dominic Dominguez picked up four second half saves to secure the victory in goal.
UP NEXT
  • American will now have to wait for the results of Army at Loyola Maryland tonight (Tuesday) at 7 PM.
  • If Army advances, the Eagles will host the title game on Saturday.
  • If Loyola advances, the Eagles will travel to Baltimore on Saturday.
