Men’s Soccer Falls in Patriot League Title Game

BALTIMORE – American University men's soccer surrendered a free-kick goal in the 83rd minute that proved to be the difference in a narrow 2-1 loss against Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon in the Patriot League Championship.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • David Coly scored his eighth goal of the season to draw the Eagles even in the first half. Eight goals in a season is the most for an AU player since Andrew Herman tallied 11 in 2002.
  • He also finished this season with 21 points, the most in a season since Liam Robley also had 21 in 2015.
  • Coly, Nicolas Blassou, and Mattias Cooper were named to the All-Patriot League Tournament Team for their postseason performance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Loyola started the scoring on a set piece in the 15th minute. Justin Ingram's corner kick lingered in the middle of the box before Kelan Swales fired a goal into the bottom left corner.
  • Just a few minutes later, Loyola looked poised to stretch its lead to two, but Dominic Dominguez came out and blocked a shot for his first save of the day.
  • American responded with heavy pressure, pestering the Loyola net with three shots on goal in a span of 3:37, the final one being Coly's goal in the 32nd minute.
  • Jack Green sent a long ball all the way across the box that found Coly, who beat his defender and sent his shot between the legs of the keeper for the equalizer.
  • The frenetic first half ended with the score tied at one.
  • In the 83rd minute, Loyola earned a free kick on a handball just outside the box.
  • Ingram looped his free kick around AU's wall into the bottom right part of the net for the game-winner.
  • Evan Schweickert placed a shot on goal with four seconds left that was saved by Loyola.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Green picked up his third assist of the season.
  • American broke Loyola's shutout streak that had stretched over the previous five games.
  • Dominguez had two saves on the day.
