Volleyball's Win Streak Snapped at League-Leading Colgate

WASHINGTON - It was a tough night for American University volleyball as the Eagles got swept for a second time this season by league-leading Colgate. The Raiders won by scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-20 to break AU's six-match Patriot League win streak.

NOTABLE
  • Rachael Bennett was the Eagles' leader with 12 digs, while Esma Sipahi added 10 and made it a double-double with 21 assists.
  • Leading all players in the match in kills was Zeynep Uzen with 13.
  • Katie Putney put down seven kills and led the Eagles with four blocks, while Carlie Fikse talled five kills and three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles did well to recover from an early 6-0 deficit in the first set, and had the score knotted up at 14-14.
  • AU was within a point, down 21-20, before Colgate scored four of the final points to take a 25-21 win despite the Eagles finishing with a 14-11 advantage in kills.
  • Colgate took control offensively midway through the second set with a 7-0 run that put it out of reach for American.
  • The Raiders tallied 15 second-set kills and hit .333 in the second set, compared to nine kills and a hitting percentage of .154 for the Eagles.
  • Uzen and Putney both posted four kills in the third set, but it was AU's least efficient hitting set of the match.
  • The third set was the tightest of the three with 12 ties, the last at 19-19 before the Raiders closed strong yet again for a 25-20 win.
NEXT UP
  • American has three regular season matches remaining, but just one on the road. The Eagles will head to Holy Cross for a 4 p.m. contest tomorrow, Nov. 6.
