Men’s Soccer Storms Back for 3-1 Victory on Senior Day

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer responded to an early deficit on Wednesday afternoon by scoring three unanswered goals, including two in the final 15 minutes, to clinch a 3-1 victory over Navy to close out the regular season.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Jerry Zouantcha scored two goals in a game for the first time in his career.
  • Robbie Matei scored a goal and added his first assist of the season for three points on the day.
  • The Eagles closed out the regular season with four straight Patriot League wins and are unbeaten in their last five matches. Their conference record is 6-2-1, which is their best since finishing the 2016 season 7-1-1.
SEEDING SCENARIOS
  • With the victory, American has clinched a top-three seed in the conference tournament.
  • With a Loyola loss and a Holy Cross loss/tie, the Eagles would be regular-season champions and host the Patriot League semifinals on Tuesday.
  • If Loyola wins/ties and Holy Cross loses OR if Loyola loses and Holy Cross wins, the Eagles would be seeded second and host a PL semifinal on Tuesday.
  • If both Loyola and Holy Cross win OR if Loyola ties and Holy Cross wins, AU would be No. 3 in the final standings and host a PL quarterfinal on Saturday at 2 PM.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 14th minute, Sidney Paris sent a through ball to Jacob Williams who broke free before sending his sixth goal of the season into the bottom right corner.
  • Exactly 45 seconds later, American responded as Zouantcha took a series of passes from Jack Green and Matei before setting and firing a shot to the bottom right corner that bounced off the keeper's hands and into the net to make it 1-1.
  • Early in the second half, David Jackson hit a shot that bounced directly off the left post.
  • Zouantcha put AU on top in the 77th minute. Evan Schweickert started the play with a long run through the middle of the field before sending a short pass to Zouantcha who placed a shot off his left foot to the right side of the net.
  • Matei iced the match for the Eagles with a tremendous press in the 89th minute as he deflected a clearance pass before making his way into the box and scoring his third goal of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Schweickert picked up his third assist of the season, while Green picked up his second.
  • Navy outshot American 18-9 in the game.
  • Dominic Dominguez made three saves, including two impressive diving stops in the first half.
UP NEXT
  • American will now have to wait for the results of Holy Cross at Boston University (6 PM) and Loyola Maryland at Bucknell (7 PM) to determine final seeding in the Patriot League Tournament.
  • The Eagles will either host a quarterfinal match on Saturday at 2 PM as the No. 3 seed or a semifinal match on Tuesday as the No. 1 or No. 2 seed.
