PHILADELPHIA – American University men's basketball associate head coach
Scott Greenman will serve as the head coach for the United States Open Men's Basketball Team for the 21st Maccabiah Games in Israel next July.
The Open Men's Basketball Team will consist of 12 players from across the U.S., all of whom will be collegiate or professional players at the time of the competition.
The Maccabiah Games, commonly referred to as the "Jewish Olympics," is the world's third largest international sporting event, following only the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup, with over 9,000 total participants representing 75 countries.
"We are thrilled to have Scott embark on this journey with us," said Josh Schachter, co-chair of the United States Open Men's Basketball team, 21st Maccabiah. "He has tremendous knowledge of the game having played and coached at high levels both in the United States and Israel. Those selected to the team will be fortunate to have Scott teach and lead them in this incredible event."
"I am incredibly honored and excited to coach the open men's team next summer, as the Maccabiah Games have continued to provide me with unique and life-changing experiences and opportunities," Greenman said. "We have assembled an elite staff of Division I coaches – Adam Cohen, associate head coach at Stanford, Skye Ettin, assistant coach at Princeton, and Mike Sotsky, assistant coach at Harvard – who will be invaluable to the team during our journey. Our staff cannot wait to travel to Israel while leading a group of talented players in international competition in July," Greenman said.
Greenman previously coached the U-18 United States Maccabiah Team back in 2009, leading the group to a silver medal. He also played in the Maccabiah Games for the Open Men's Team in 2005, prior to his senior campaign at Princeton. In addition to his Maccabiah participation in Israel, Greenman also spent the 2006-07 season playing professionally in Israel for B'nei Ha'sharon, helping lead his team to a final four finish in both the Israeli Premier League Championship and the Israeli Cup.
Entering his ninth season on
Mike Brennan's staff at American, Greenman was named Associate Head Coach last month.
"This is a great opportunity for Scott to gain valuable experience coaching at the international level," said Brennan. "The AU men's basketball family will all be pulling for him."
