Five Wrestlers Earn Podium Finishes at 12th Annual Bearcat Invitational

VESTAL, N.Y. - Five American University wrestlers earned podium finishes at the 12th annual Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open. Overall, the Eagles had 23 wrestlers who competed in 79 bouts at the day-long meet.

Notable Results
  • 285 - Isaac Righter was the Eagles' highest placewinner of the day, advancing to the final and taking second place.
  • Righter earned a pin in 1:14 in his quarterfinal vs. Robert Unruh of Buffalo, and lost just 3-1 to two-time NCAA qualifier Ethan Laird of Rider in the final.
  • 184 - Connor Bourne won twice by decision to start his day and get himself to the semifinals where he suffered his first loss.
  • Bourne then fell by just two points, 5-3 in the third-place bout to Sam DePrez of Binghamton to take fourth overall.
  • 125 - Max Leete started his day with a 16-1 tech fall before falling to #32 Jacob Allen of Navy in the quarterfinals.
  • Leete recovered with a pin in 39 seconds in the consolation round of 8, won by major decision over Buffalo's Patrick Adams, and took fifth place by medical forfeit.
  • 149 - Patrick Ryan lost by just a single point, 4-3 in his opening bout, before running the table the rest of the day.
  • Ryan closed out with five straight wins including a major decision over Cornell's Daniel Koll. In the fifth-place bout, Ryan held strong to defeat Trae McDaniel, 3-2.
  • 197 - Just like his teammate at 149, Will Jarrell started the day with a loss but finished at 5-1 overall.
  • Jarrell's wins included a tech fall and a pin before his 4-1 victory by decision over Cade Wilson of Brown in the fifth-place bout.
  • 141 - Ethan Szerencsits finished off the podium, but went 4-2 overall with his four straight wins including two pins.
  • 174 - Ben Root had a run of three straight victories that included a pin and a late comeback with near fall points against teammate Colin Shannon in the consolation round of eight.
Thoughts from Coach Borrelli
  • "Overall, today was very productive. We were able to evaluate the entire roster and it was great watching many of the guys compete for the first time.
  • We came away healthy, which is a bonus, as the possibility of injury is a major concern when taking 23 wrestlers to an event.
  • I was impressed with our effort across the board. We wrestled with a lot of grit, even in the matches we lost.
  • We have a very young team, and helping them improve technically is much easier than trying to teach grit.
  • We have a very short week to prepare for a well-coached George Mason program. We look forward to getting back in front of our fans in Bender Arena this Thursday night."
