Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match at Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. - One night after winning a five-set match at Lehigh after twice coming back from a set down, the tables turned on American University volleyball with Army West Point beating the Eagles in the same way. American was up 1-0 and 2-1, but the Black Knights battled back and won the fifth set 15-11 to take the match.

NOTABLE
  • Juniors Zeynep Uzen and Asli Celikkol posted 16 kills each to lead AU, with Uzen getting her second straight double-double by also recording 11 digs.
  • Junior Inbal Peleg notched a double-double for a third match in a row, adding 18 digs to 39 assists.
  • The defensive effort got a team-high 26 digs from graduate student Chiara Bosetti, along with six blocks apiece for sophomore Allie Burke and senior Carlie Fikse.
  • Sophomore Katie Putney had an efficient outing with seven kills and a team-high hitting percentage of .240.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles capitalized on an error-filled opening set by Army, as the Black Knights posted 14 attack errors compared to just three for AU. 
  • Fikse put up three blocks in the opening set, and the Eagles came away with a 25-18 win to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The second set saw eight ties and five lead changes. AU was within a point at 24-23, but an Army kill for Allanah Cutler tied up the match at 1-1.
  • Celikkol posted five kills in the third set to help AU turn the tables and win 25-23, as the Black Knights once again struggled on the attack and committed 12 errors.
  • Army responded from being down 2-1 with its strongest set of the night, out-hitting AU .429 to .133 and winning 25-13.
  • After a 6-6 tie in the fifth set, Army pulled ahead for good. The Eagles were within a point at 11-10, but the Black Knights scored four of the final five points to get the set and match win.
