Volleyball Ends Road Swing with a Three-Set Victory at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The last of six straight road matches ended in victory for American University volleyball, as the Eagles earned a sweep of Navy by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-23. Familiar faces Zeynep Uzen and Asli Celikkol were the leaders for AU, each posting double-doubles.

NOTABLE
  • American's victory marked the 900th win in the history of the program, with the record now standing at 900-430 since 1978.
  • Making a return to competition for the first time in 677 days was junior middle hitter Onuchi Ndee, who was sidelined while recovering from injury for all of the 2020-21 and 2021 seasons until now. Ndee was ranked in the top 10 in the Patriot League in blocks as a freshman two seasons ago.
  • Uzen posted her ninth double-double of the season, leading AU with 17 kills while also tallying 10 digs. Celikkol also had a strong three-set match with 10 kills and 10 digs.
  • Graduate student Chiara Bosetti led the Eagles and all players in the match with 21 digs, and freshman Esma Sipahi recorded a match-high 35 assists.
  • Senior Carlie Fikse posted seven kills while hitting .357, and led AU with four blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team hit very well in a close opening set that saw nine ties. The Eagles broke open a 15-15 tie with a 6-1 run, but Navy twice came back to make it a one-point game.
  • Up just 23-22, American got a block from Fikse for set point, and then a kill from Fikse for the 25-22 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • The Eagles improved to hit .243 in the second set compared to .182 for the Mids, and a Celikkol kill for a 6-5 lead put AU ahead for good.
  • The lead was as many as eight on a few occasions for American in the second set. Uzen helped hold off a late push by Navy, scoring AU's final three points on kills for a 25-19 set win.
  • Uzen then caught fire in the third set, knocking down 11 kills to make sure the Eagles got out of Annapolis with the sweep.
  • The final set was the closest of the night with 10 ties and five lead changes. The final tie came at 23-23 before an Uzen kill and a Bosetti ace put the nail in it.
NEXT UP
  • After six straight road games, the Eagles finally return home on Saturday, Oct. 16 to host Lehigh at 4 p.m.
