Volleyball Starts Second Half of Patriot League Play With a Victory over Lehigh

WASHINGTON - The return home to Bender Arena was good to American University volleyball, at least after a short setback. The Eagles (11-10, 5-4) dropped the first set 25-22 to Lehigh (6-14, 2-7) but rebounded in a big way to win the next three by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-19.

NOTABLE
  • The Eagles got huge contributions from many in what was truly a team effort. Junior Asli Celikkol stood out, matching her career-high with 16 kills while also recording a career-high 14 digs.
  • Junior Zeynep Uzen was outstanding with 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .421.
  • Another career high came from senior Carlie Fikse with 13 kills. She also hit .478 and led the Eagles with four blocks.
  • Graduate student Chiara Bosetti led all players in the match with 18 digs.
  • Starting at setter, freshman Esma Sipahi posted a career-high 43 assists to go with a career-high six digs and a career-high three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles hit an impressive .407 in the opening set, but their total number of kills fell well short of Lehigh's.
  • The Mountain Hawks led 23-17 before a 4-0 American run, fueled by three Fikse kills, but ultimately the Eagles fell short and lost the first set by a score of 25-22.
  • American was up just 11-10 in the second set before exploding for an 8-0 run that put things out of reach for Lehigh. Sipahi served up an ace for AU's first set point, and after one more by Lehigh, Uzen put it away with a kill for the 25-15 win.
  • Celikkol posted six kills with zero errors in a big third set, helping AU jump out to a 14-7 lead.
  • The Mountain Hawks' attack errors did them in over the final stretch as the Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Fikse was the difference-maker in the fourth set with five kills on six attempts. AU led from the first point and never trailed, hitting .542 with 14 kills and only a single error.
  • Celikkol added three kills in the final four AU points including the match-winning point.

NEXT UP
  • The Eagles will take a one-match break from Patriot League play, heading to Richmond to face VCU at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20.
