Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Match in Four Sets at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. - In a break from Patriot League action, the American University volleyball team fought to stay in the match after going down 2-0 at VCU, but the Eagles ultimately lost in four sets. PL Player of the Week Zeynep Uzen was a leader yet again with her 10th double-double of the season.

NOTABLE
  • Uzen added 13 digs to 12 kills in three blocks in a strong showing for AU. She has now led or tied for the team lead in kills in 16 of 22 matches.
  • Carlie Fikse recorded a match-high six blocks while also hitting double figures in kills with 10.
  • AU also got 10 kills from Asli Celikkol along with eight digs.
  • Rachael Bennett posted 15 digs, her season high and just one dig shy of her career high.
  • Leading the Eagles with 17 digs was libero Chiara Bosetti.
  • Esma Sipahi and Tyra Areskoug split time at setter, with Sipahi recording 19 assists and Areskoug getting 17.
  • Katie Putney contributed nine kills and four blocks, while Allie Burke also posted four blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first two sets saw nine ties each, the last at 17-17 in opening set and the last at 21-21 in the second set. Each time, the Rams made a strong push late to pull ahead.
  • VCU Kialah Jefferson scored back-to-back kills to help her team win the first set 25-20, and she had a kill and an ace in a 4-0 VCU run to end the second set (25-21).
  • Fikse came up with four blocks and three kills on just four attempts to help AU recover and win the third set 25-21.
  • The Eagles were down 18-15 before Bosetti served out a 4-0 run that included two Fikse-Putney blocks and a kill from Putney.
  • AU held the lead the rest of the way, getting set point on a Celikkol kill before a VCU attack error sealed the deal.
  • The Rams responded with their best hitting of the night in the fourth set and led most of the way, coming up with 19 kills to AU's 13 and winning 25-19.
NEXT UP
  • AU will be back to Patriot League action this weekend at home, facing Loyola Maryland at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 and Navy at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24.
