Men’s Soccer Continues Unbeaten Streak with 1-1 Draw Against Boston

WASHINGTON – The American University men's soccer team found itself in its fourth overtime game of the season on Saturday afternoon, which ultimately ended in a 1-1 tie against Boston University.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • The draw continued a four-game unbeaten streak for the Eagles as they are 3-0-1 in their last four contests.
  • David Coly scored on a penalty kick to extend his point streak to seven games, matching his own school record from earlier in his career. He also scored a point in seven straight games from April 3, 2021 to Aug. 29, 2021.
  • Lorenzo Gordon had five saves between the pipes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a span of two minutes and 16 seconds in the early part of the first half, American generated four corner kick chances.
  • Chaos ensued in the 8th minute after that fourth corner kick by AU.
  • American put the ball in the back of the net as the head referee called it, but the assistant referee overruled him and called a handball against Boston, which sent AU to the penalty spot.
  • Coly's attempt missed wide to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the 26th minute, Zemi Rodriguez blasted one of his three shots on the day, but it was saved by Boston.
  • AU held a 6-2 advantage in shots taken in the first half but couldn't find paydirt.
  • Coly got his redemption in the 48th minute. Robbie Matei was running alone in the final third before being tripped up by Boston's goalie in the box, who picked up a yellow card in the process.
  • Coly confidently stepped to the penalty spot and drilled a low shot into the left corner for his fifth goal of the season.
  • In the 59th minute, Gordon picked up back-to-back saves to keep the Terriers off the board.
  • Boston found the equalizer in the 79th minute as a long throw-in from Brian Hernandez found the head of Miles Dycaico inside the six-yard box. Ronaldo Marshall was right there for the follow-up and fired a shot to the far post to make it 1-1.
  • Perhaps the best scoring chance in overtime for AU came in the 94th minute. Nevin Baer was all alone in the box and squared up a rocket shot to the near post that was saved by Boston's keeper.
  • The Eagles held a 6-2 advantage in shots during the 20 minutes of overtime but neither side could find the back of the net.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • This is just the second draw in nine all-time meetings between the two programs.
  • AU held a 17-12 advantage in shots, which marks their highest shot total of the season.
  • Each side received three yellow cards, including one on Boston's head coach Kevin Nylen.
