Volleyball Completes Comeback Road Victory at Lehigh, Winning in Five

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Two comebacks were needed and two were earned by American University volleyball, as the Eagles fought their way back and prevailed 3-2 at Lehigh on Friday night. AU got double-doubles from junior Zeynep Uzen, junior Inbal Peleg and graduate student Chiara Bosetti on its way to winning by scores of 16-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-14 and 15-11.

NOTABLE
  • Uzen posted more than 20 kills for a second straight match, leading all players with 22 and making it a double-double with 12 digs.
  • Peleg added 13 digs to 30 assists, and Bosetti led all players with 26 digs while also tallying 10 assists and three aces.
  • Sophomore Katie Putney led AU with six blocks while sophomore Allie Burke was right behind her with five.
  • Some of the most impressive offensive numbers of the night came from senior Carlie Fikse who knocked down 10 kills on 24 attempts with only a single error to hit a match-best .375.
  • Also finishing in double figures in kills was junior Asli Celikkol with 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set got away from American fairly early on, and the Mountain Hawks came up with four aces including two in the final three points to win it 25-16.
  • The Eagles trailed 24-20 late in the second set before exploding for a 6-0 run, capped by back-to-back Uzen kills, to win 26-24 and even up the match at 1-1.
  • AU limited its attack errors in the third set compared to the first two. but the Eagles' 10 kills weren't enough when compared to Lehigh's 16. The Mountain Hawks gained an early lead and held it throughout to go up 2-1 for the match with a 25-21 set victory.
  • Momentum then swung back to American in a big way, with the Eagles racing out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth set. They went on to hit .312 compared to .057 for Lehigh, posting 11 kills with just a single error and winning the set easily, 25-14.
  • Uzen saved some heroics for the fifth and final set, coming up with four kills and putting AU on top for good at 6-5. The Eagles led 11-5 before Lehigh came back to make it interesting at 12-11, but two Mountain Hawk errors were followed by a Celikkol kill as AU closed out with a 3-0 run.
NEXT UP
  • The Eagles now head to Army West Point on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match to conclude their weekend road trip.
