Volleyball Falls at Loyola Maryland Despite Career-Highs for Bosetti and Uzen

BALTIMORE - Despite incredible performances from graduate student Chiara Bosetti and junior Zeynep Uzen, the American University volleyball team lost in three sets at Loyola Maryland on Tuesday night.

NOTABLE
  • Bosetti kept AU fighting with a career-high 35 digs, which ranks fifth for a three-set match in NCAA Division I so far this season.
  • Uzen posted a career-high 24 kills to lead all players in the match and tie for sixth in the NCAA for a three-set match in 2021. Uzen recorded exactly eight kills in each set, and finished with a season-high hitting percentage of .353.
  • Junior Inbal Peleg recorded a double-double with 15 digs to go with 26 assists, and junior Asli Celikkol reached double figures in digs with a season-high 12.
  • The three-set loss was the first in program history for American against Loyola Maryland, who is looking strong this year at 13-4 overall and 5-1 in the Patriot League.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Uzen put down kills for the first three points of the match and the Eagles soon had a 4-0 lead, but the Greyhounds caught up quickly.
  • Nine ties followed, the last at 19-19 before back-to-back Loyola kills gave the Greyhounds the lead for good, and they went on to win the set 25-23.
  • The Eagles took advantage of more errors by Loyola in the second set and quickly built an eight-point lead at 10-2. AU still led by eight at 18-10 before a 5-0 run for the Greyhounds got them within three and forced a timeout for the Eagles.
  • Loyola got one more point to make it a two-point deficit before AU stopped the run with Uzen's 13th kill of the match.
  • The Eagles soon led 22-17 and looked in control, but the Greyhounds came all the way back to tie and later take the lead at 24-23.
  • Uzen responded with back-to-back kills to give AU it's first set point of the match, but Loyola's Lauren Link answered with three kills in a row to give her team a 27-25 win and a 2-0 lead.
  • Loyola had by far its strongest hitting set in the third with 17 kills and only a single error (.432). It was American's strongest set as well (.256) but not enough to keep the Greyhounds from taking the match.
  • The Eagles led late at 21-20, but Loyola scored five of the final six points for a 25-22 win. Link finished as the leader for the Greyhounds with 23 kills, 10 digs and a hitting percentage of .465.
NEXT UP
  • The Eagles have two more road matches this weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. contest at Lehigh on Friday, Oct. 8. They'll head to Army on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match.
