Volleyball Beats Lafayette in Four Sets for Sixth Straight PL Victory

WASHINGTON - Avenging a straight-set loss from earlier in the month, American University volleyball kept its streak of Patriot League wins going with a 3-1 victory over visiting Lafayette. The Eagles have now won six league matches in a row and are tied for third in the PL standings.

NOTABLE
  • Zeynep Uzen posted 20 or more kills for a fourth match in a row, tying for match-high honors with 22.
  • Getting AU off to a great start and finishing with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .360 was Katie Putney, who also contributed three blocks.
  • Tyra Areskoug, Allie Burke and Carlie Fikse all tied for the team lead with four blocks, and Areskoug posted 44 assists as well along with four kills and seven digs.
  • Inbal Peleg came on strong later in the match to finish with seven kills, as did Fikse.
  • The Eagles' usual leader in digs came through once again, as Chiara Bosetti recorded 17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American hit .406 to Lafayette's .294 in the first set and got five kills from Putney.
  • The Eagles trailed 16-13 before a 4-0 run put them in the lead by one. The score remained tight the rest of the way, but with a 23-22 lead, Putney posted back-to-back kills to close it out and give AU a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • Deegan proved tough to stop for AU in the second set, getting nine kills as the Leopards hit .481 to AU's .280 en route to a 25-18 set win.
  • After trailing 10-6 in the third, Uzen and better blocking got the Eagles back in it and they took a 13-12 lead on a kill from Burke.
  • The lead was short-lived as the Leopards ran off three straight and kept a slim lead down the stretch. AU was down 24-22 before closing out with a 4-0 run. The Eagles fought off one set point with an Inbal Peleg kill and then tied it up on an Areskoug-Fikse block.
  • AU won the set 26-24 on a Lafayette attack error to take a 2-1 lead in the match, finishing with five blocks in the set compared to one for the Leopards.
  • The fourth set was tight all the way through with 12 ties and seven lead changes.
  • American was down one at 21-20 before an Areskoug kill followed by an Areskoug service ace. Uzen then put down two kills for match point, and an error on Lafayette ended it.

NEXT UP
  • American will play two matches on the road next weekend. First up is a 6 p.m. contests at league-leading Colgate on Friday, Nov. 5.
