WASHINGTON - For the 10th time in program history, the No. 17 American University field hockey team was perfect in regular season Patriot League play after the Eagles shut out Colgate on Saturday, 3-0.
HEAR FROM COACH JENNINGS...
"I am very happy and proud of the team finishing the year undefeated in regular season league play. Colgate played great early on and forced us to adjust and step up our game. I was pleased with how we improved quarter by quarter but still know we have more work to do to get where we want to go. Now it is the start of the second season. We are very excited to begin postseason this Thursday and know that we will have to be at our best."
NOTEWORTHY
- American's two fifth-year seniors, Gaby de Kock and Noor Coenen opened scoring for the day in the second and third quarters, respectively. Sophomore Emily Horace added the assist on de Kock's goal and added a goal of her own, this time with an assist from classmate Imogen Hatton, to round out the scoring in the fourth quarter.
- This is the fifth shutout for sophomore goalkeeper Bryn Underwood this season, and the fourth during conference play. Underwood has allowed only three goals against Patriot League opponents this year after Bucknell scored two and Boston University snuck in one. The returning PL Rookie of the Year had a pair of saves for the day.
- With her goal, Coenen now has 54 in her career and owns the No. 2 spot in program history outright behind the staggering 103 goals from Stacey Siu-Butt ('96). Her 135 career points also puts her only three behind Camila Infante ('06), who sits third in AU history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Colgate had a strong start out of the gate, posting two shots in the first quarter while holding off AU's attack.
- The Eagles took control in the second quarter, though, starting in the opening minutes when de Kock found the back of the cage after a long cross in from Horace.
- American put up four more shots before halftime but were held off by three key saves by Colgate goalkeeper Anna Unger, including one off a shot from Coenen in the final seconds of the stanza.
- AU was back in control of the game in the second half, earning six more shots before Coenen put one away, running in an intercepted pass and placing a blazing shot just outside of Ungers reach.
- After pitching in the assist on the opening goal, Horace finally found the back of the cage herself in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Imogen Hatton took advantage of an open cage after Unger stepped off her line to challenge, sneaking by a quick pass to Horace on the far post. Horace beat out Colgate's back line and tapped in the third and final goal of the day.
