Men's Soccer Picks Up Three Points Against Colgate With 2-1 Victory

WASHINGTON – In his first career start, Jack Green scored twice, including an 86th minute strike to clinch a 2-1 victory over a scrappy Colgate squad on Saturday afternoon at George Washington's Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • The Eagles have now won three straight Patriot League games and sit in a tie for second place in the conference standings with Holy Cross at 16 points.
  • Green has now scored three goals in the last two games.
  • Mattias Cooper picked up two assists on Green's tallies.
  • With Army's loss at Loyola Maryland, the Eagles have clinched a top-four seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will host at least one game. If Navy loses tomorrow against Bucknell, the Eagles will clinch a top-three seed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Things were quiet in the early part of the game as both teams were adjusting to the different playing surface.
  • In the 25th minute, Nevin Baer flipped a short pass ahead to Cooper, who raced along the endline before dishing an excellent pass to Green for the opening goal.
  • Just over six minutes later, American surrendered an own goal, which allowed Colgate to draw even. The Raiders sent a dangerous cross right in front of the keeper and AU's defense made an uncharacteristic mistake.
  • The Raiders drew four corner kicks in the first half but only managed one shot as AU controlled possession for the majority of the period.
  • Early in the second half, the Eagles had a great chance to take an early lead but two shots in six seconds couldn't break through Colgate's defense as the teams remained deadlocked.
  • After playing overtime in five of its last six matches, it looked like AU was headed for another overtime session as neither side could get ahead.
  • Green changed that in the 86th minute. Cooper sent a great service into the box that first found the head of Jerry Zouantcha at the back post before Green was able to fire with his left foot to the bottom right corner for the game-winning goal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Dominic Dominguez made two second-half saves to secure the victory in net.
  • Colgate had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Green is the first AU player this season to score two goals in one game.
  • Zouantcha and Baer picked up their first assists of the season.
UP NEXT
  • American closes the regular season with a home match against Navy on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 1 pm.
