WASHINGTON - Junior
Zeynep Uzen put together yet another outstanding performance in leading American University volleyball to its fourth straight Patriot League win. Behind Uzen's 28 kills and 15 digs, the Eagles (13-11, 7-4) beat visiting Navy (9-11, 5-6) by scores of 27-25, 25-18, 20-25 and 25-22.
NOTABLE
- Uzen was just two kills shy of her career high 30 kills set just one day prior. The double-double was her 11th of the season.
- Senior Carlie Fikse came up big with eight kills, hitting a match-best .667 and contributing a pair of blocks.
- Leading the Eagles in digs was Chiara Bosetti with 17, and Rachael Bennett posted 14 digs.
- Getting the start at setter for the first time this season was Tyra Areskoug who put up a match-best 45 assists to come just two assists shy of her career high.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles mounted an impressive comeback in their first-set win after a late Navy push put the Mids up 24-21.
- Uzen posted three kills in a 4-0 run to get AU on top 25-24, and after Navy tied it at 25-25, Uzen responded with back-to-back kills for a 27-25 set win.
- While the set win was exciting, there was concern as well after an injury forced Asli Celikkol out of the match. She posted four kills prior to leaving the court, and her status is not yet determined.
- American's best hitting of the match was in a dominant second set that saw the Eagles hit .375 to Navy's .033.
- AU had 16 kills to Navy's nine in that second set, getting nine from Uzen and four from Katie Putney.
- Caitlin McKee provided a spark off the bench in the match, particularly at the end of the second set when she put down two kills in AU's final four points for the 25-18 win.
- Navy turned up the intensity with a balanced attack that gave the Mids a 25-20 win in the third set.
- After trailing 15-11, the Eagles came back to tie at 17-17 and three more times up to 20-20 before Navy closed out with five straight points for a 25-20 win.
- The fourth set was the most exciting of the match with 14 ties and nine lead changes. AU recorded just nine kills to the Mids' 14, but limited its errors to stay in it. After the final tie at 22-22, the Eagles closed it out with three straight points and fittingly ended the match with a kill from Uzen.
NEXT UP
- AU plays two more matches at home before its last road trip of the regular season. The Eagles will be back in Bender Arena to host Bucknell at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, and Lafayette at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30.
