No. 19 Field Hockey Claims Regular Season PL Title with Win at Boston U.

WASHINGTON - The No. 19 American University field hockey team (10-3, 5-0 PL) secured its 12th Patriot League regular season title and the top seed in the PL Tournament on Saturday with a 3-1 road win over Boston University (3-13, 1-4 PL).

NOTEWORTHY
  • It was another senior showcase on the score sheet, with Maura Phelan, Aidan Rossman, and fifth-year Noor Coenen getting on the board with one goal each.
  • Coenen's goal was the 53rd of her career as she moves up alongside Magdalena Aguilar ('02) for second in program record book. Her 133 career points also inches her closer to the No. 3 spot on the all-time list, currently owned by Camila Infante ('06) with 138 points.
  • Junior Charllene Boshoff added the assist on the late goal by Coenen.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Bryn Underwood had seven saves on the day - the most since her career-high 11 against No. 9 Maryland in September.
  • The Eagles led in shots, 15-12, and corners, 6-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the third consecutive game, American came out of the gate fast with two goals in the first 15 minutes of regulation.
  • The Eagles picked up an early corner, but the back-to-back shots from Coenen and senior Hannah Moser were both blocked by the Terriers defense. BU was called with the foul after the second shot, though, putting Phelan on the line for the penalty stroke. For the second time in her career, the senior capitalized with a well-placed ball into the upper left corner of the cage, giving AU a 1-0 advantage. This was Phelan's third career goal and second of the season after she sent one in during the Eagles' 6-0 rout against Holy Cross last weekend.
  • AU found the back of the cage once again nearly 10 minutes later with a backhanded chip in from Rossman after a nice run across the top of the circle.
  • American continued to press in the final minute of the stanza, drawing back-to-back corners as the seconds ticked down, but the shot from sophomore Emily Horace was blocked, and the second from Boshoff was saved by BU goalkeeper Caroline Kelly.
  • Boston picked up the tempo in the second quarter, posting six shots while holding the Eagles to only a single look, but Underwood came up with four clutch saves, including one in the final 30 seconds to maintain the two-goal cushion heading into halftime.
  • It was a back-and-forth battle in the third quarter, with the Eagles opening with four looks at goal, but two landed wide of the cage and two were picked off by the BU defense and goalkeeper.
  • An intercepted pass at midfield sent BU on the offensive and Thalia Steenssens was able to draw Underwood out of position before slipping through the quick cross to Payton Anderson who capitalized on the open cage to pull the score up to 2-1 midway throgh the quarter.
  • Both teams struggled to maintain possession at the midfield for the next 20 minutes, getting off only three shots each before entering the final two minutes of the game.
  • With just over a minute on the clock, AU picked it up its first corner opportunity since the fifth minute of the third quarter. The insertion from fifth-year Gaby de Kock found the stick of Boshoff who sent the long ball across the circle to Coenen. The two-time Offensive Player of the Year laid out a low shot into the bottom right corner of the cage to secure the 3-1 win.
