Early and Late Goals Push Men’s Soccer to Victory at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Zemi Rodriguez scored 47 seconds into the match and Jack Green scored with four seconds left in the first overtime to push American University men's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Lafayette on Saturday night.
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Rodriguez scored for the second time this season while Green registered his first tally.
  • The Eagles went to overtime for the fifth time in their last six matches.
  • American improves to 4-2-1 in Patriot League play with the victory and sits in sole possession of third place in the standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Right out of the gate, American was pressuring on offense. Ethan Boyle sent a short pass ahead to Rodriguez in the box, who beat a double-team and fired a low shot to the bottom right corner for a goal just 47 seconds into the match.
  • American fired two more shots in the half but were stout on defense to hold Lafayette scoreless at intermission.
  • The second half was all Lafayette as they fired 12 shots compared to none for American.
  • Nicolas Blassou made two incredible stops at the end line to prevent Lafayette from scoring, once with his head and the other time kicking the ball out of play after the shot beat Dominic Dominguez.
  • The Leopards were finally able to find an equalizer in the 80th minute. Started by a free kick near midfield, Marcos Kitromides scored his fifth goal of the season to make the score 1-1.
  • In the overtime period, American began possessing the ball deep in their attacking third for the first time since the first half.
  • As the clock was winding down, Mike Bleeker got possession back for AU on their defensive half of the field.
  • The Eagles worked the ball up the field and Mattias Cooper fired a shot that Lafayette's Alex Sutton was able to block, but Green was there for the rebound to put the ball in the back of the net with four seconds left.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Boyle recorded his third assist of the season while Cooper recorded his second helper.
  • With the win, American improved to 8-0-3 all-time when playing Lafayette on the road.
  • Lafayette outshot American, 20-6.
UP NEXT
  • American will get some much-needed rest before hosting Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 pm for Senior Day at Reeves Field.
  • The Eagles will then close the regular season with a home match against Navy on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 1 pm.
