Volleyball Closes Out the Weekend With a Sweep at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Two close sets were followed by a decisive third as American University volleyball picked up its second Patriot League sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory at Bucknell (5-10, 1-5). The Eagles (8-8, 2-2) won by scores of 27-25, 25-23 and 25-16 behind some impressive performances from a number of individuals.

NOTABLE
  • Senior Carlie Fikse was error-free with eight kills on 11 attempts for a match-high hitting percentage of .727.
  • Nearly posting a double-double was junior Asli Celikkol with nine digs to go with a team-high 10 kills.
  • Sophomore Katie Putney posted nine kills and a hitting percentage of .571, her best at American so far.
  • Junior Zeynep Uzen recorded a team-high four blocks along with seven kills and seven digs.
  • Graduate student Chiara Bosetti led all players with 16 digs. Both Bosetti and junior Ally DeGaray served up three aces to lead all players in the match.
  • Junior Inbal Peleg led AU with 27 assists, also coming up with five kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An extremely tight first set saw 16 ties and six lead changes. Bucknell never earned a set point, but the Eagles had two thwarted before a Putney kill followed by an Uzen/Fikse block finally gave AU the set win at 27-25.
  • American hit .357 in the opening set, with the Bison also hitting well at .333. Uzen's strongest set was the first, as she finished with five kills.
  • Celikkol made a big difference in the second set with six kills, helping the Eagles lead by as much as 17-13.
  • The Bison made a comeback and tied the score at 19, 20 and 21 before AU took the lead for good. The Eagles lost one set point after being up 24-22, but Uzen got a kill for a 25-23 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • AU started off slow and trailed 4-0 in the third, but quickly picked up momentum. The Eagles led 15-13 at the midway point but closed out the set with a 10-3 run.

  • "It is always good to win on the road, and even better to bounce back the day after a loss. We'll continue to build upon the good and push to improve match by match through the conference season."
NEXT UP
  • AU will have only a few days off before its next match, set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Loyola Maryland.
