Men’s Soccer Secures Dramatic Victory with McGovern’s Golden Goal

WASHINGTON – With dark clouds looming over Reeves Field, Malachy McGovern jumped up and headed home the golden goal in the 94th minute to give American University men's soccer a 2-1 win over Army West Point on Saturday afternoon.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • McGovern scored his first goal since Aug. 30, 2019.
  • David Coly started the scoring for AU with his equalizer in the 26th minute. He now has 17 points this season (6G, 5A), which is the most for an AU men's soccer player since Joe Iraola had 19 points during the 2016 season.
  • American improves to 3-2-1 in Patriot League play with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It took a while for American's offense to find a rhythm to start the game as they didn't register a shot for the first 20 minutes.
  • Army's offense was in sync right away as they jumped ahead 1-0 in the 23rd minute.
  • Justin McStay dribbled the ball along the endline and sent a short pass right to John Poncy's feet for a goal.
  • American didn't take long to respond. Ethan Boyle and Zemi Rodriguez worked a short corner in the 26th minute before Boyle sent a beautiful ball into the box that found the head of Coly near the far post for the equalizer.
  • In the second half, American had two exceptional chances to go ahead. Coly almost had his second goal of the game in the 59th minute but Jacob Suppiah stretched out for one of his three saves.
  • In the 87th minute, a series of good touches in the attacking third left Boyle with a shot toward the bottom right part of the net, but Suppiah nabbed another save.
  • Dominic Dominguez made three saves for the afternoon, none bigger than his 76th minute save of Oscar Pereira's shot. He shifted to his right to thwart the Patriot League's leading scorer.
  • With storms rolling in as overtime began, both sides showed a sense of urgency.
  • The Eagles drew a corner kick three minutes into the extra session and Jack Green's service found a leaping McGovern, who headed it down and into the back of the net to give AU the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Rodriguez and Boyle both picked up their second assists of the season. Green's helper was his first point of the season.
  • AU held a 13-8 advantage in shots.
  • The Eagles drew all four corner kicks in the match.

  • American is next set to travel to No. 15 James Madison on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
