ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Road games in the Patriot League are never an easy task, but American University men's basketball was up to the challenge on Wednesday night inside Alumni Hall. Facing a five-point deficit with six minutes remaining, the Eagles showed grit to come-from-behind and top Navy, 62-54.
QUICK NOTABLES
- 54 points is the fewest allowed by American this season.
- Jamir Harris scored 19 points on 5-of-8 from three-point range, his best performance since scoring 19 against Boston University on Jan. 5.
- Five made triples is the most for an Eagle since Connor Nelson drained five against Lehigh on Jan. 11.
- Stacy Beckton Jr. was an efficient 3-for-3 from long range on Wednesday, going for 15 points and adding three steals. The performance from deep matches a season-best previously set against Stony Brook on Dec. 21.
- Sa'eed Nelson was solid all-around, scoring 13 points while adding eight assists, five rebounds, and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- American won the tip and Harris drained a three-pointer to put the Eagles on top out of the gate.
- AU owned the first four minutes, racing out to a 12-2 lead thanks to eight quick points from Harris before Navy called a timeout with 15:17 remaining in the half.
- Navy would find its groove in the middle of the frame, going on a 15-2 run of its own to take the lead for the first time at 19-18 with 7:38 left in the half.
- Sa'eed hit his first three-pointer since Jan. 8 to put the Eagles on top, 27-21, with 4:38 to play.
- A three from Beckton Jr. gave American a seven-point lead with 2:50 left, but Navy scored the last four points of the half to head into the locker room with AU on top, 31-29.
- The Eagles found themselves trailing quickly as Navy scored six straight points to open the second half.
- A 13-3 run by American gave them a six-point advantage after a bucket from Yilret Yiljep with 12:14 to play.
- Navy countered with an 11-0 run in the middle portion of the half to take its largest lead of the game, 49-44, with 6:38 remaining.
- After the Midshipmen went up 51-47 with 5:16 left, AU showed resilience and refused to fold in a tough road game.
- Back-to-back buckets in the paint by Mark Gasperini put American up, 54-51, and the Eagles kept their foot on the gas, closing the game on a 15-3 run.
BY THE NUMBERS
- It was a quick-paced game with only 18 free throws shot between the two teams, including eight in the final 90 seconds.
- American outshot Navy, 47.9 percent to 42.9 percent.
- The Eagles were especially stout defending the three-point line, holding the Midshipmen to one made triple in the second half and 22.2 percent overall.
MILESTONE WATCH
- Sa'eed now stands at 1,935 points, 48 away from passing Willie Jones (1957-60) and moving into third place on AU's career scoring list. To move into first place, Sa'eed now needs 122 points.
- Sa'eed now stands at 494 assists and needs 12 helpers to pass Mike Sampson (1984-1988) and move into third place on AU's career assists list.
- With two steals on Wednesday night, Sa'eed passed Jave Meade of Holy Cross (2000-04) to move into third all-time in the Patriot League for career steals with 248.
