Men's Basketball Tops Army on Senior Day

WASHINGTON -- American University men's basketball picked up its third win in four games and swept Army West Point with a decisive 72-62 victory on Senior Day inside Bender Arena on Saturday afternoon.

QUICK NOTABLES

  • Stacy Beckton Jr. recorded his first double-double since Jan. 26, 2019 against Bucknell after scoring a career-high 19 points and grabbing a season-high 11 boards.
  • On Senior Day, Sa'eed Nelson put on a show. The guard scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds, going 6-for-8 from the free-throw line and draining a season-high three shots from beyond the arc.
  • After being held scoreless against Navy on Wednesday, Connor Nelson responded with 17 points, tying his career-best with five three-pointers. He added three steals and three rebounds, as well.
  • Jamir Harris went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe, including a couple crucial makes in the final minutes of play. Harris made his presence felt on the glass, grabbing a career-high eight rebounds.
  • American has now beaten Army four straight times and improved to 12-11 (8-4 PL) on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team was able to score in the first three minutes of action.
  • Army took control in the early part of the half, taking its largest lead at 12-7 with 12:08 left.
  • American responded with a 13-4 run to take a 20-16 lead on a Ben Lubarsky jumper with 9:07 remaining in the half.
  • The Eagles then closed the half on a 14-4 run that was punctuated by a three-pointer from Connor Nelson as time expired to take their largest lead of the half, 36-24, into the locker room.
  • To open the second frame, American kept its foot on the gas, incrementally extending the lead until it reached a game-high 18 points with 7:02 left to play.
  • But Army didn't go away quietly. A 10-0 run brought the Black Knights within eight at 58-50 with 3:52 remaining.
  • Good defense and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch proved to be a winning formula for the Eagles as Army couldn't cut the deficit to any fewer than seven.
