WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (6-7, 2-1 PL) continued to show its dominance at home with a decisive 73-57 win over Army West Point (4-10, 0-3 PL) on Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi paced the team with a season-high 19 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the line alongside her 6-for-11 from the field and 2-for-4 from outside. She just missed out on her first career double-double with a team-high nine rebounds and gave up only one turnover in her 29 minutes of play.
- All 11 Eagles that played added points to the final score sheet, including a season-high 33 off the bench behind eight-point efforts from sophomores Emily Fisher, Taylor Brown, and Maddie Doring.
- Junior Indeya Sanders pitched in a team-high seven assists and came away with a pair of steals.
- AU closed shooting 45.9 percent from the field (28-61), 29.2 percent from three (7-24), and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe (10-12).
- The Black Knights, who came off a 93-point performance at Colgate on Sunday, were held to only 57 with 35.9 percent from the floor (23-64), 31.8 percent from three (7-22), and 36.4 percent (4-11) from the line.
- Army put two players in double-figures with Hope Brown leading with 19 points followed by 11 from Lindsey Scamman. Scamman added a game-high 10 boards for the double-double.Â
- Morgann Yancey added the only points off the bench for Army with six.
- American led Army in points off turnovers, 15-12 and points in the paint, 38-28. The Black Knights outworked AU on the boards, though, 41-35, and put up 12 second chance points to American's three.
- Army opened with its only lead of the game, picking up an early 4-0 advantage before senior Morgan Bartner put AU on the board.
- Back-to-back three's from Marenyi and sophomore Laura Graytok continued the Eagles' run that ended at 18-4 before Brown got Army back on the board with 1:23 left in the stanza.
- By the end of the first quarter, AU picked up a 21-9 lead behind seven points from Marenyi.
- The Eagles continued to build on that lead in the second quarter as a 5-0 solo run from Marenyi brought the score up to 26-9. Army cut the lead back down to 12 briefly after a seven-point run from Alisa Fallon, but a quick pair of baskets from Fisher in response rebuilt a 16-point cushion.
- Late Army free throws ended the first half with a 13-point margin at 36-23.
- The two teams traded baskets throughout the first few minutes of the third quarter, but a fast break layup from Sanders after a steal sent the Eagles on a 6-2 run to regain an 18-point advantage.Â
- A three from Yancey cut the lead back down to 13 with 1:02 left in the stanza, but Doring responded with a trey of her own to send the teams into the final break at 55-39.
- AU picked up its largest lead of the game midway through the fourth quarter after a jumper from freshman Karla Vres off the bench brought the score to 69-46.
- Freshman Thuraya Abdul Hamid also picked up a quick pair of points off the bench as she put in her first minutes as an Eagle with just under 2:00 left in the game.
- The Black Knights kept pace with AU in the final 10 minutes, 18-18, to close the game at 73-57.
