WASHINGTON -- The American University men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak in a tightly contested conference matchup against Boston University, 67-63, on Sunday afternoon inside Bender Arena.
QUICK NOTABLES
- American has now topped Boston five straight times dating back to Feb. 8, 2017 when the Terriers last won, 67-64.
- Sa'eed Nelson recorded the first double-double by an American player this season and nearly picked up a triple-double. Nelson's remarkable stat line was as follows: 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
- Sunday's performance was the first time this season that the Eagles have won a game in which they trailed at halftime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boston won the tip and rattled off the first five points of the game.
- Mark Gasperini scored the Eagles' first bucket of the game off a nice bounce pass inside from Sa'eed Nelson to make the score 5-2 at 16:48.
- Nelson gave American its first lead, 10-9, with a layup of his own at 12:24.
- The game slowed down after AU was whistled for its seventh team foul with 10:58 left in the half. Boston had the bonus for the remainder of the half, shooting 18 free-throw attempts compared to just four for American in the frame.
- Both teams went back-and-forth with the lead for the remainder of the first half with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage.
- Boston headed into the locker room with a 25-23 lead after scoring at the buzzer on an inbounds play off a timeout right before the end of the half.
- The Terriers hit 6-of-6 field goals to start the second half and took a 37-30 lead with 15:55 left.
- Jamir Harris found his shot in the second half, hitting three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put the Eagles back on top, 38-37.
- Gasperini closed out a 13-4 run in the middle portion of the half with a layup to put the Eagles up, 54-46, with 6:45 left to play.
- Boston didn't lay down, however, and clawed all the way back to tie the game at 59-59 with 2:15 remaining. The Terriers missed their second free-throw attempt which would have put them back on top.
- Connor Nelson hit a three from the corner on the next possession to give American a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
- Harris hit four crucial free throws down the stretch to ice the game, including two to put the Eagles up by four with six seconds to play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Harris scored all of his team-high 19 points in the second half, going 4-for-8 from three-point range in the process.
- Sa'eed Nelson grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in his remarkable double-double performance.
- Connor Nelson proved integral off the bench, going 3-for-8 from three-point range with three rebounds and three assists.
- With Gasperini in foul trouble early, Josh Alexander had to step up. He grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and scored four points in 20 minutes off the bench.
- After two straight games struggling from beyond the arc, the Eagles finally found their stroke in the second half on Sunday afternoon. American went 10-for-27 from long range, marking the fifth time this season that they have hit at least 10 three-pointers in a game.
- The back-and-forth battle featured seven ties and 16 lead changes.
