Men's Basketball Hangs On in Exciting Fashion at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- It was tied with 3:11 left to play inside Christl Arena on Wednesday night, but American University men's basketball dug deep to hold Army scoreless down the stretch and pulled out a second consecutive Patriot League win.

QUICK NOTABLES

He moved up two spots on the Patriot League's career scoring list to No. 9 with his 12-point performance, passing Adonal Foyle from Colgate and Greg Sprink from Lehigh as he now has 1,786 career points.
  • With two steals, Nelson moved to No. 3 on AU's career steals list. He passed Mark Nickens, who had 231 steals from 1980-83.
  • Mark Gasperini had a season-high 19 points, including two huge buckets down the stretch.
  • With the win, the Eagles have their first winning streak of the season and move to 2-1 in Patriot League play.
  • American has now taken three straight games over Army, their longest streak in the series since winning six straight from Feb. 17, 2010 to Feb. 29, 2012.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams were a little sluggish out of the gate in the first four minutes of play.
  • After Jamir Harris came up with an offensive rebound, Connor Nelson hit a three-pointer to put the Eagles ahead, 9-8, with 14:32 left in the first half.
  • Army responded with a 6-0 run from their big man Matt Harris to take their largest lead of the game, 14-9, with 11:58 remaining.
  • S. Nelson hit three-pointers on the front and back end of a 15-4 American run that put the Eagles in control in the middle portion of the half.
  • Jacob Boonyasith gave AU their biggest lead of the first 20 minutes with a three-pointer to put the Eagles up 30-21 with 5:30 left.
  • The first half was swift with only eight fouls called and five free-throw attempts en route to a 38-30 American advantage at the intermission.
  • Out of the gate in the second half, both teams exchanged baskets with AU maintaining a slim lead.
  • Army first cut the deficit to two at 47-45 with 12:29 to play. On the ensuing possession, Harris drained a corner three to get the lead back to five.
  • Although the Black Knights never held a second-half lead, they did tie the game at 57-57 and then 60-60 in the final five minutes of play.
  • C. Nelson drove the lane and found a trailing Gasperini for an open layup to put American up for good, 62-60, with 2:46 remaining.
  • Army was held scoreless in the final 3:11 and two made free throws from Harris with 14.4 seconds left iced the game for AU.
