WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (7-11, 3-5 PL) sent the game into overtime after a thrilling last-second basket from sophomore
Jade Edwards, but couldn't retake the lead in extra time and fell to Colgate (14-5, 6-2 PL), 63-62.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edwards paced the Eagles with 17 points alongside her seven rebounds. She was one of three to land in double-figures followed by 13 points from senior Kaitlyn Marenyi and 10 from sophomore Emily Fisher.
- Senior Morgan Bartner pulled down a career-high 11 boards along with her nine points.
- The Eagles closed shooting 39.7 percent from the field (23-58), 30 percent from three (6-20), and 83.3 percent from the line (10-12).Â
- Rachel Thompson led the Raiders with 20 points, followed by Abby Schubiger's 14 points. Ava Williams led on the boards with 10 rebounds.
- Colgate finished shooting 37.3 percent from the field (25-67), 29.4 percent from three (5-17), and 88.9 percent from the charity stripe (8-9).
- Both teams closed with 39 rebounds, tying AU's season-high from High Point (Nov. 18).
- The Eagles led in bench points, 20-15, and points in the paint, 30-28, but the Raiders held the advantage in second chance opportunities, 6-5, fast break points, 12-5, and points off turnovers, 19-12.
- American gave up 18 turnovers to Colgate's 12.
- Although the Eagles opened with the lead after an early jumper from Bartner, Colgate quickly took control of the first quarter after early turnovers halted AU's offense.
- The Raiders picked up a five-point advantage midway through the stanza, but Bartner's third basket of the night and a three from freshman Lauren Stack tied the game at 11-11 with 3:16 left in the quarter. The Raiders closed with a 7-0 run, though, to take an 18-11 lead heading into the second.
- AU slowly cut into that lead coming out of the break after baskets from Edwards and sophomore Taylor Brown brought the Eagles within four on three occasions.
- Fisher hit a jumper to bring American back within striking distance at 22-20 with 5:11 left in the half, but Thompson responded in kind on the other end to rebuild the four-point gap.
- Edwards once again narrowed the gap to two but a quick four points from Colgate brought the score to 28-22 with 1:56 remaining.
- A pair of clutch three's from Fisher tied the game at 28-28 with 51 seconds on the clock, and a foul from Colgate on the other end after a missed jumper put junior Indeya Sanders on the line where she hit one to send the Eagles into the locker room up, 29-28.
- The Raiders were quick to retake the lead in the second half, opening with a 9-2 run before Marenyi halted their advance with a four-point play after she was fouled on a three-point make.
- Bartner followed up with another jumper to tie the game for the fifth time at 37-37.
- By the end of the quarter, Colgate picked up a 47-42 lead.
- The Eagles fell to a brief eight-point deficit within the first couple minutes of the fourth quarter, but chipped away at that lead over the next six minutes before a 7-0 run knotted the score back up at 56-56 left in regulation.Â
- Neither team was able to capitalize on the next four possessions, and with seven seconds left on the clock Colgate had control of the ball with an opportunity to retake the lead. The Eagles had fouls to spare, though, and ate up the next six seconds before a baseline inbound found Schubiger under the basket to give the Raiders a 58-56 lead with 1.4 seconds on the clock.
- A quick AU timeout advanced the ball to the other end, where Sanders threw in a long inbound who, in mid-air, barely put her hand on the ball before hitting the layup to tie the game at 58-58 with 0.4 on the clock.
- The Raiders got off the last second shot but it fell well short of the basket, sending the Eagles into their first overtime of the season.
- It was a tight race over the next five minutes, with Colgate picking up an early three-point lead before a layup from Fisher and a pair of free throws from Edwards put the Eagles ahead at 62-61 with 1:17 remaining.
- Taylor Langan hit the jumper on the other end to give the Raiders a 63-62 lead, and the Eagles fell just short of capitalizing on their final two possessions.
