Marenyi's Career-High Paces Women's Basketball Over Lehigh

WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (8-11, 4-5 PL) earned some redemption against Lehigh (13-7, 5-4 PL) on Wednesday with a 64-56 win on the road behind a career-high 26-point effort from senior Kaitlyn Marenyi.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In her 100th game as an Eagle, Marenyi went 10-for-19 from the field and 4-for-8 from three to earn a new career-high 26 points, besting her previous 24-point single-game record. For the third time this conference season, she failed to give up a single turnover in 37 minutes of play.
  • Junior Indeya Sanders also closed in double-figures with 11 along with her game-high seven assists, followed by sophomore Maddie Doring who put up 10 in her first career start.
  • Sophomore Jade Edwards led on the boards with seven rebounds.
  • The Eagles shot 38.9 percent (21-54) from the floor, 40 percent (8-20) from three and were sent to the line 20 times where they shot 20 percent (14-20).
  • Camryn Buhr led the Mountain Hawks' 10 scorers with 10 points and nine rebounds.
  • Lehigh shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-13) from the perimeter, and went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
  • American forced a season-high 22 turnovers for 27 points while Lehigh scored 10 off AU's 15 miscues.
  • Lehigh outdid AU in the paint, 34-26, on second chance opportunities, 6-2, and off the bench, 25-6, but the Eagles held the advantage on the fast break, 10-8. The Mountain Hawks held the advantage on the boards, 37-27.
  • Doring opened her first career start with her first of two three's on the night, but the Eagles still found themselves back on their heels early after an opening 9-3 Lehigh run.
  • Marenyi got AU's offense rolling coming out of the media timeout, hitting all three of American's field goals in the final 3:30 to cut the gap back down to one. But Lehigh had the final say with a last-second three to rebuild a six-point advantage at 16-10 heading into the break.
  • Sophomore Emily Fisher hit a quick two coming off the bench in the second quarter, but once again it was Marenyi who proved to be the offensive spark for the Eagles.
  • She hit her second three of the game to bring the score to 18-15, then hit another after picking up the steal on the defensive end to tie the game at 18-18.
  • A layup from Sanders continued what would become a closing 18-2 run as the Eagles held Lehigh without a point for the final 4:57 of the stanza.
  • Included in that run was 12 of Marenyi's 26 points and seven Lehigh turnovers.
  • By the end of the stanza, AU had outpaced Lehigh 20-4 for the Eagles' largest second-quarter lead of the season and a 30-20 lead heading into halftime.
  • AU built up as much as a 13-point lead after baskets from Doring, Edwards, and Marenyi, but Lehigh found its footing in the final 4:00 of the quarter, hitting six unanswered points to cut the Eagles' lead down to six.
  • Edwards broke up the run with AU's final basket of the stanza, but the Mountain Hawks hit another closing run to land within four at 42-38 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • Edwards hit another jumper to open the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to stymie the Lehigh offense as the Mountain Hawks retook the lead for the first time since the early minutes of the second quarter, gapping the Eagles by as much as three before a well-timed three from Sanders tied the game at 47-47.
  • A free throw from Bartner and another clutch three from Doring gave AU a 51-47 lead, and from there it was a race to the finish as the Eagles fought to distance themselves from the Mountain Hawks.
  • Six points in the final 3:15 from Marenyi, including a steal and fast break layup with 1:28 left in the game, proved to be the final boost that American needed, as Lehigh resorted to fouling in the final 30 seconds, putting Edwards, Marenyi, Bartner, and Doring on the line where they went 8-for-10 to close the game at 64-56.
