Late Goals Deliver Win for Field Hockey Over Georgetown

WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team (5-4, 1-0 PL) earned local bragging rights with its 2-1 victory over Georgetown (5-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) in front of a strong District Day crowd on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second consecutive game it was senior Jette Dieckmann who worked as one of the difference-makers for the Eagles, contributing to both fourth-quarter goals with her third goal of the season and first assist. Sophomore Aidan Rossman picked up the other assist on the day while classmate Hannah Moser picked up her first game-winner of the season.
  • Dieckmann was also one of the three goal-scorers during the 3-1 victory over Bucknell on Saturday as the Eagles opened Patriot League play with a strong performance against a tough Bison squad.
  • The Eagles battled against heat and fatigue in its second game in as many days and struggled to capitalize on their six penalty corner opportunities in the first half, including a series of five within a minute during the first quarter. AU dominated possession in the opening 30 minutes of play, holding the Hoyas to only three shots and two penalty corner opportunities as the teams entered the half at a 0-0 stalemate.
  • The third quarter seemed to be destined for another scoreless end until the final two minutes when an AU turnover at midfield sent Georgetown on the offensive. Jax van der Veen took the ball into the circle before finding Cami Osborne just behind the shoulder of freshman goalkeeper Fiona Minter to put the Hoyas ahead, 1-0.
  • The Eagles seemed poised to respond in the final minutes of the quarter with a pair of shots from junior Noor Coenen, including one off the team's sixth penalty corner of the quarter, 12th of the game. But Georgetown was able to hold the AU offense at bay and entered into the final 15 minutes with the goal advantage.
  • Both teams put up a thrilling final 15 minutes, starting with an early equalizer from Dieckmann after a long pass from Rossman found her on the back corner of the cage.
  • The Eagles continued to pressure with near-goals from freshman Megan Hoffman and a nice backhand shot from Moser that was knocked off course by the Hoyas goalkeeper. With under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Dieckmann picked up the turnover in front of the Georgetown goal and ran it into the corner before feeding in a nice cross to Moser who tapped in the game-winner from the back post.
  • At the final whistle, American led Georgetown in shots, 14-5, and penalty corners, 12-2.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Fiona Minter walked away with one save on the day while the Hoyas' keeper, Megan Maynes, earned five.
NEXT UP
  • American will continue Patriot League play next weekend with an 11 a.m. start at Lehigh on October 5.
  • The next home game will be Friday, Oct. 11, against Holy Cross at 4 p.m.
