WASHINGTON – The American University field hockey team (6-4, 2-0 PL) remains undefeated in Patriot League play after a 4-1 win over Lehigh (5-4, 1-2 PL) on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles continued to show their depth with four players scoring against the Mountain Hawks and four adding assists.
- AU held the advantage in possession during the first quarter, putting up four shots and earning a late penalty corner, but still entered the break at a 0-0 stalemate.
- Freshman Megan Hoffman was the first to get on the board, taking a pass from junior Noor Coenen through traffic to beat the Lehigh goalkeeper.
- Lehigh had a couple looks to tie the game before halftime, but some tight AU defending and a big save from freshman goalkeeper Fiona Minter maintained the AU lead after 30 minutes.
- Sophomore Aidan Rossman was quick to get on the board in the third quarter after taking a cross from senior Jette Dieckmann.
- American continued laying on the pressure, putting up four shots and earning three penalty corners in the next three minutes before junior Ella Arata added her name to the score sheet, collecting the rebound after a shot from sophomore Maura Phelan.
- The Mountain Hawks, after failing to earn a penalty corner during the first half, capitalized off their second of the third quarter as Lenke Havas put Lehigh on the board in the final two minutes of the period.
- The goal did little to hold off the Eagles' momentum, though, as AU threatened with five more shots in the early minutes of the fourth quarter.
- Junior Noor Coenen closed out scoring for the day in the final 10 minutes of the game as she knocked in her seventh goal of the season after the team's seventh penalty corner insertion of the game. Junior Lauren Fredricks picked up the assist along with sophomore Georgia Davies for the insertion.
- The Eagles held the advantage in shots, 25-6, and penalty corners, 9-3.
- Goalkeeper Fiona Minter picked up two saves while Lehigh keeper Maddie Kahn earned 12 for the day.
HEAR FROM COACH JENNINGS
"We had a solid effort today and received contributions from all our lines to help us get the result. The key of the day was the way we started the third quarter – an increase in focus and intensity ultimately delivered two critical goals in the span of three minutes. We will continue to work on getting sharper over the next week to prepare for a tough league match against Holy Cross on Friday."
