COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Noor Coenen led the American University field hockey team (3-3) to a dominant 7-0 victory over Towson (0-5) to close out the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md., on Sunday. She was one of five Eagles to score during the Eagles' first shutout of the 2019 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Coenen paced the squad with her first hat trick of the season, scoring three goals while contributing two assists for eight points, tying her career-high from her freshman season.
- Four other Eagles joined Coenen on the scoresheet with junior Gaby de Kock and sophomores Atina Pagani, Josie Formica, and Georgia Davies.
- Davies and freshman Merel Dupont added the team's only other assists for the day.
- Senior Caroline Miller led the team in goal with her first career shutout.
- The Eagles controlled the game from start to finish, outpacing the Tigers in shots, 28-1, and penalty corners, 12-1.
- Towson keeper Tess Okkerse came away with 13 saves.
- The Eagles laid on the pressure early, earning the first corner of the day. A hard shot from Coenen couldn't find the back of the net, but the Eagles continued to press the Towson keeper and de Kock slammed home a loose ball in front of net to earn the day's first goal.
- American continued to control the tempo throughout the rest of the quarter, earning three more corners and six more shots but falling just short of capitalizing.
- The pressure continued into the second quarter with the Eagles' fifth corner of the game coming within the first minute. It took until the seventh minute for AU to get back on the board, though, with Pagani picking up a rebound from behind the keeper to put away her first career goal.
- AU capitalized on the next two corner opportunities, with Formica and Davies both knocking in the deflection off shots from Coenen to send the team into halftime with a 4-0 lead.
- It was all Coenen for the second half, as she hit in back-to-back goals in the third quarter starting with a chip in after some nice stick work maneuvered her through Towson's defensive line.
- She followed that in with a long shot off the team's ninth corner opportunity, taking the pass from Dupont after a Davies' insert.
- The Eagles kept hammering away in the fourth quarter, putting up seven shots and earning a pair of penalty corner opportunities. But Towson's Okkerse proved to be a tough match and it wasn't until the final minutes of the game when a penalty stroke opportunity gave Coenen her first hat trick since her freshman season.
- This closes an impressive weekend for Coenen, who also contributed to both goals during Friday's win over James Madison. She comes out of the two games with four goals and three assists for 11 points.
- Formica also proved to be a difference-maker in both games with goals against both the Dukes and the Tigers.
