WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team (1-3) will play two neutral-site games this weekend, facing James Madison (2-2) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Towson (0-4) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be played at the University of Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex, and will be broadcast on BTN Plus.
SERIES HISTORY
- JMU holds a strong lead in the all-time series at 22-11, but AU has won the two most recent games. The Eagles dominated in a 5-2 decision vs. the 17th-ranked Dukes in 2018, and edged the 19th-ranked Dukes 2-1 in 2016..
- The Eagles have a commanding lead against Towson all-time, 28-4-1. AU defeated the Tigers in a 7-0 shutout last season.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American opened the season with a 4-2 win over New Hampshire but has since lost three in a row. One of those losses was to No. 16 Delaware and the other two were nailbiters.
- The Eagles fell on a late Richmond goal, 3-2, and most recently lost a 1-0 shootout decision at Old Dominion.
- Sophomore Hannah Moser has had a strong start to the season and leads the team with four points after scoring goals against both New Hampshire and Richmond.
- Junior Noor Coenen also added a goal against the Wildcats and pitched in an assist against the Spiders.
- Senior Jette Dieckmann, junior transfer Gaby de Kock, and freshman Megan Hoffman round out the goal-scorers.
- AU has seen a lot of action from its 11 newcomers in the early season, including the pair of transfers with de Kock and sophomore Atina Pagani, who contributed an assist against New Hampshire.
- All 11 have seen playing time in the first two games, including freshman goalkeeper Fiona Minter who has played full games in her first four starts as an Eagle. She enters the weekend with eight saves and a 2.42 goals against average.
- The Eagles placed three players on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, starting with the program's third consecutive Preseason Offensive Player of the Year in Coenen. Dieckmann and sophomore Georgia Davies joined her on the league's preseason squad.
- AU was selected to finish second in the Patriot League behind defending champion Boston University.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
- JMU is 2-2 so far, most recently edging Georgetown 3-2 last Sunday.
- The Dukes' only two losses have come against Top 25 teams - No. 20 Liberty and No. 14 Ohio State.
- Four players have scored so far for JMU this season, led by redshirt senior Miranda Rigg with three goals and an assist for seven total points.
- Kylie LeBlanc and Caitlin Nelson have both seen time in goal, but Nelson has been the goalie of record in all four games. She has posted 11 saves to 10 goals allowed.
- Rigg, junior Rachel Yeager and sophomore Ongeziwe Mali all earned spots on the Preseason All-CAA Team.
- The Dukes were picked to finish third of seven teams in the CAA Preseason Poll. JMU is under the direction of Christy Morgan, in her sixth year back with the Dukes as head coach after nine previous seasons from 1991-2000.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
- Towson is still looking for its first win, most recently falling in overtime at Colgate on Sunday before losing 5-0 at No. 4 Maryland on Wednesday.
- Freshman Georgia Beachley scored two of the Tiger goals in the 4-3 final at Colgate and leads the team in goals.
- Fellow rookie Samantha Aljets assisted on each goal by Beachley and leads the team with those two assists.
- Beachley is currently tied for sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) stats for goals scored while Aljets is fifth in assists.
- Freshman goalkeeper Tess Okkerse has started in all four games and has 25 saves on the season.
