NORFOLK, Va. - The American University volleyball team (4-3) registered its first sweep of the 2019 season with a dominant win at Norfolk State (0-6) on Wednesday, September 11.
MATCH NOTES
- Junior Olivia Wassner led the Eagles from the outset, hitting a perfect 1.000 in the first set with four kills. By the end of the night, she had a game-high eight kills with only one error for a season-high .583 hitting percentage. She also pitched in a game-high 26 assists.
- Junior Chiara Bosetti also walked away with a solid performance with a season-high six aces to lead the team.
- Senior Aleksandra Sochacka and freshman Onuchi Ndee each finished with six kills while senior Kristen Largay paced the team with nine digs.
- The Eagles closed the match with 13 service aces while Norfolk State was held to six.
- The Spartans kept AU close throughout the first set and took a brief three-point lead before the Eagles pulled away after an attack error and a couple of kills from Wassner and freshman Onuchi Ndee.
- American dominated most of the second set after a 9-0 run built a 14-5 lead. The Spartans cut the gap down to single digits briefly, but the Eagles rebuilt a 12-point advantage to take the set, 25-13.
- The third set was another close battle as the Spartans drew even three times before a couple of short runs built the final six-point cushion to close the match.
NEXT UP
- The Eagles will continue their four-match road series on Friday, Sept. 13, with the first two matches of the Duke Invitational. AU will open against host Duke at noon followed by a 5 p.m. match against Georgia.
- A noon showdown against Northwestern on Saturday will close the weekend.
- American will return next week with a 6 p.m. match against Delaware State on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
