Volleyball Sweeps Duke, Falls After Battle Against Georgia

DURHAM, N.C. – The American University volleyball team (5-4) relived one of its biggest moments in history on Friday with a sweep against Duke in the historic Cameron Indoor Stadium to open the three-match Blue Devil Classic. The Eagles broke even after the first day with a 3-1 loss to Georgia.

This was AU's first visit to Cameron since 2013 when the Eagles upset Duke, 3-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the program's first Sweet 16 appearance.

#AUVB 3, Duke 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-17)

  • Freshman Asli Celikkol paced the Eagles in the sweep over the Blue Devils with 10 kills, nearly tying her season-high against George Washington in the season-opener. She also added a season-high nine digs to rank second on the team and fall just short of her first career double-double.
  • Senior Jeanne Westney also stepped up in a big way for American, posting a season-high eight kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
  • Junior Olivia Wassner contributed a game-high 29 assists while senior Kristen Largay led on the defensive end with 18 digs.
  • The Eagles hit a season-high .278 with 39 kills and 14 errors.
  • The Blue Devils closed with a 0.77 hitting percentage behind seven kills from Gracie Johnson.
  • Sarah Nelson led Duke with 14 assists while Mackenzie Cole picked up 11 digs.
  • The Eagles held on to the lead throughout the first set, picking up as much as a seven-point advantage after a three-point run brought the score to 21-14. A late Duke run held the Eagles just off set point before a pair of attack errors closed the first at 25-22.
  • It was a much tighter battle in the second half with five ties and three lead changes. A series of attack errors and a pair of kills from Largay sent the Eagles on an 8-0 run to bring the score to 15-21. Once again, back-to-back Duke attack errors delivered AU the set, 25-16.
  • The Blue Devils found their rhythm in the early minutes of the third set, but the Eagles never lost contact and a Celikkol kill sent AU on a 4-0 run to take the final lead of the match.
  • Another Duke attack error brought the Eagles to match point at 24-15, but a brief burst from the Blue Devils held AU at bay until a final kill from freshman Onuchi Ndee closed the set and match, 25-17.

#AUVB 1, Georgia 3 (20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 19-25)

  • The Eagles battled well against a tough Georgia squad behind another solid effort from freshman Asli Celikkol, who closed with 11 kills and eight digs.
  • Junior Olivia Wassner closed with 30 assists while senior Kristen Largay picked up 17 digs.
  • Freshman Onuchi Ndee led the team with five block assists and one solo block. Wassner and junior Helena Elbaek also earned a pair of block assists each while Celikkol picked up the only other solo block of the night.
  • The Eagles closed with a .163 hitting percentage and had 34 assists, six aces, and 57 digs.
  • The Bulldogs were led by four double-figure efforts from Rachel Ritchie (16 kills), Kacie Evans (15), and Kayla Rivera (14).
  • Meghan Donovan led the team with 51 assists while Kendall Glover came away with 21 digs.
  • The Eagles kept within striking distance throughout the early part of the first set, but a 4-1 Georgia run midway through built a four-point gap that AU fought to narrow for the remainder of the set.
  • Georgia once again took the early lead in the second set, but AU continued to challenge as the two teams drew even 11 times before a pair of kills from Elbaek and Wassner sent the Eagles on a 4-1 run to pick up a 21-18 lead. A kill from Celikkol closed the set at 25-22.
  • American struggled to maintain the momentum in the third set, though, after a 9-1 run pulled the Bulldogs ahead, 19-10. The Eagles responded in kind, hitting a 5-1 run of their own to land back within four but couldn't edge any closer and closed the set, 25-18.
  • Once again, it was Georgia who had the strong start to open the fourth set before a pair of attack errors kicked off a 4-0 AU run to land at 10-8. The Eagles threatened a couple of times down the stretch after a Georgia attack error, 17-16, and a kill from Celikkol, 18-17. But a closing 7-2 ended the set and match, 25-19.

The Eagles will be back in Cameron on Saturday for a noon match against Northwestern to close the tournament and are set to return home next week with matches against Delaware State (Sept. 17), Rutgers (Sept. 20), and Ole Miss (Sept. 21).
