WASHINGTON - The American University (2-2) women's basketball team couldn't hold off the hot shooting of George Mason (3-1) on Thursday and fell to the Patriots, 73-55. This is the second road loss of the season for the Eagles after they picked up back-to-back wins at home over Villanova and High Point last week.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the third consecutive game, sophomore Jade Edwards found herself atop the score sheet for AU with 16 points alongside a career-high four assists.
- Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi and sophomore Maddie Doring were the only other two Eagles to land in double-figures with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Junior Indeya Sanders also helped lead the team with a career-high four steals.
- The Eagles closed shooting 43.5 percent (20-46) from the field, 31.6 percent (6-19) from 3-point range, and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the line.
- Mason was paced by a 23-point effort from returning A-10 Player of the Year, Nicole Cardano-Hillary. Jacy Bolton and Alexsis Grate followed with 10 points each.
- The Patriots shot 50 percent (27-54) from the field, 57.1 percent (8-14) from long range, and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the charity stripe.
- Mason led the Eagles in points off the bench, 20-15, but AU led in points off turnovers, 21-14, points in the paint, 28-26, and fast break points, 10-5.
- Once again, American had a slow start to the game, shooting only 4 of 11 from the field and 2 of 5 from 3-point range in the first quarter. Early foul trouble also plagued the Eagles as Marenyi picked up a quick two within the first minute and was forced to sit the bench for the remainder of the half.Â
- The Eagles closed the first quarter at a 17-12 deficit, but quickly began chipping away at the Patriots' lead in the second quarter.Â
- An 11-0 AU run coming out of the media timeout midway through the stanza delivered the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 29-24, but the Patriots were quick to strike back with a pair of treys to close the half back ahead at 30-29.
- American couldn't regain the momentum in the second half as they shot only 2 of 13 (.154) from the field to close the third quarter trailing 49-36.Â
- Mason's run continued in the early minutes of the fourth quarter as the Eagles scored only two points in a 6:00 span, giving the Patriots their largest lead of the game at 67-43.
- A quick eight points from Marenyi in the final two minutes cut the gap to under 20 points, but it was too little too late as American trailed 73-55 at the final buzzer.
