EMMITSBURG, Md. – American University junior Brendan Johnson led three American University finishers in the top four Friday as the Eagles went 4-0 as a team at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals.
Johnson finished the event in 15:37.3, winning the individual title by eight seconds over UMBC senior Hassan Omar.
In the double-dual scoring system, the Eagles won all four pairings with the opponents in the field. The Eagles beat George Washington (17-43), Loyola Maryland (15-49), Mount St. Mary's (15-50) and UMBC (23-33).
On the women's side, freshmen
Kassidy Ayres and
Adriana Hooks finished fifth and sixth to lead the Eagles to the line, earning four wins and two losses in the double-dual scoring.
Ayres covered the 5K course in 19:06.7, with Hooks finishing in 19:08.4. Junior
Corina Velazco was eighth overall in 19:18.5, giving AU three finishers in the top 10.
American defeated Loyola Maryland, the University of Maryland, Mount St. Mary's and Towson in the scoring, and lost to George Washington and UMBC.
The event opened the 2015 cross country season for all the teams competing on Friday. American will compete next weekend at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis.
