BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Brendan Johnson and Joshua Ellis led the American University men to a 14th-place finish in the team standings Friday at the 42nd annual Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University.
For the women, AU's
Kassidy Ayres led the Eagles to the line and placed 36th overall as American was 28th in the team standings.
Johnson ran 35th and Ellis was 37th overall in the men's race, with Ellis improving 14 places from his run a year ago in this event. Johnson covered the 8-kilometer course in 24:48, with Ellis one second behind.
AU freshman
Matthew Rainey got AU's third spot for the first time this season, finishing 84th in 25:17. Sophomores
Alaeldin Tirba (110th, 25:31) and
Sam Doud (133rd, 25:46) rounded out the top five for American.
Georgetown outran Villanova, 37-56, to earn the men's team title. The Hoyas put four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 13. The Wildcats had a 1-2-4 finish individually, but couldn't match the Hoyas' top five runners.
Villanova junior Patrick Tiernan won the individual title in 23:55, with teammate Jordan Williamsz three seconds back.
Ayres ran the women's 6K race in 21:22, finishing fourth among the freshman runners in the field.
The University of Guelph (Ontario) won the women's team competition with 105 points, with Cornell in second with 155.
Temple senior Blanca Fernandez won the women's race in 20:27, with UConn's Emily Durgin two seconds behind.
American is scheduled to compete next on Oct. 17 at the Leopard Invitational, hosted by Lafayette. The Eagles are in preparation for the Patriot League Championships, which take place on Oct. 31 at Colgate.
