ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Nick Regan and Brendan Johnson finished fifth and sixth individually to lead American University to a second-place team finish in the men's race Saturday at the Navy Invitational cross country meet.
The Eagles finished eighth in the women's event, the Salty Dog Invitational, as junior
Kelseagh Budris led American to the line in 44th overall.
Regan and Johnson broke up a dominant Navy team that earned each of the top four places, six of the top eight and 10 of the top 15. The Midshipmen won the team title with 17 points, while American had 74 points and UMBC was third with 85.
Regan covered the 8-kilometer course at the Naval Academy Golf Course in 24:39.53, only 10 seconds ahead of Johnson (24:49.38).
Joshua Ellis (25:07.22) got up for 12th overall for the Eagles.
Tom Woermer (23rd, 25:39.37) and freshman
James Belfatto (42nd, 26:27.09) also earned scoring spots for AU.
Senior John Sweeney of Navy won the individual title in 24:29.92, just edging teammate Stephen Schroeder by 0.35 seconds.
Johns Hopkins posted runners in the 1-2-4 spots to finish with 24 points and best Navy (53) for the women's team title. Richmond was third on the women's side with 78 points.
Sophia Meehan (21:53.65) and Frances Loeb (22:04.85) finished first and second individually for the Blue Jays.
American's cross country teams are off until Oct. 4 when they compete in the Lehigh Paul Short Run.
