Volleyball Remains Undefeated, Wins D.C. Volleyball Challenge Title; Watch Highlights

The American University volleyball team remained undefeated on the year, sweeping Georgetown and George Mason to win the D.C. Volleyball Challenge on Saturday.

American (3-0) opened the day with a 3-0 win over Georgetown. The first set was tied at nine apiece early before the Eagles used a 13-2 run to take a 20-11 lead on a kill by Kelly McCaddin, forcing the Hoyas to call the timeout. American continued to roll, with a kill by McCaddin closing out the set for a 25-14 Eagles' victory.

Georgetown (2-1) cut the second set to an eight-point game late, but consecutive kills from Kristyna Lindovska and Juliana Crum followed by an ace from Lindovska gave American the 21-10 advantage. The Eagles held off an attempt for a Georgetown rally down the stretch, picking up a 25-13 win in the second set.

The final set featured 11 ties before three straight points put American up 22-19. The Hoyas made it a two-point match twice, but Bree Scarbrough secured the sweep with the kill for match point and the 25-22 victory.

Lindovska led the Eagles with 14 kills, hitting .393 on the night, while Monika Smidova filled the stat sheet with 34 assists, seven kills, seven digs and four blocks. Crum led the team with 16 digs, adding six kills. American outhit Georgetown .324 to .144 on the day. Lauren Saar led the Hoyas with 11 kills and two blocks with MacKenzie Simpson notching 14 digs.

The Eagles carried its momentum into the second game of the day, handing George Mason (0-3) a 3-0 loss in front of 2,254 fans in Bender Arena for the Seventh Annual Bender Blue Out. The Patriots jumped out to an early 7-1 lead but American battled back, knotting it up at 10 on an attack error by George Mason. The Patriots pulled away again, going up 22-20 on an error by American. The Eagles kept the score tight, tying it at 22 on a kill from Sarah Katz and taking a one-point lead off a George Mason error. The Patriots took the lead once more, but American called a timeout and answered with three straight points for the 26-24 win.

The Patriots jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but an ace by Smidova sparked a 5-0 run by American for the 12-7 advantage. George Mason remained close, with a block by Laura Spencer and Tiffany Clarke tying it at 18-all. The Eagles were able to respond once again, tallying six straight points to go up 24-19. The Patriots tied it again at 24 off a kill from Clarke, but consecutive kills from McCaddin and Allison Cappellino gave American the 2-0 match lead with a 26-24 win.

The two teams battled back and forth in the third set, registering ties seven times in the game. American opened up a 21-18 lead on an error by George Mason, and held off the Patriots' attempt at a rally. Back-to-back kills from Lindovska and Smidova solidified the 25-22 win and American's third straight sweep of the season.

Lindovska and McCaddin finished with 13 and 10 kills, respectively, and Megan Rosburg recorded 17 digs for the Eagles. Smidova registered 36 assists and seven blocks in the match. McCaddin also totaled five blocks on the night. Lana Zonjic led the Patriots with 15 kills, hitting .353.

Smidova was named the tournament MVP following the match with Lindovska and Morgan Hendrix joining her on the All-Tournament Team. Representatives from the other schools included MacKenzie Simpson and Dani White from Georgetown, Allyson Lods from Howard and Lana Zonjic from George Mason.

The Eagles head out on the road next weekend for the Sacred Heart Invitational in Fairfield, Conn. American opens the tournament against the host on Friday, September 6 at 4:30 p.m. and face Manhattan on Saturday, September 7 at 10 a.m. and UMES at 3 p.m.
