Box Score The American University women's soccer team was on point on Friday night at crosstown rival Howard, shutting out the Bison for a 1-0 victory. It was the initial win of Anabel Jimenez Hering's head coaching career with the Eagles.
"The team is excited to get the first win of the season. It was definitely a physical game against Howard and it was a team effort to battle for full 90 minutes," said Hering. "Even though I would have liked to come away with a few more goals, the silver lining is that we are creating goodscoring opportunities, and our attacking style is starting to come together. We look forward to using this momentum to get another win against Liberty on the road."
Despite the low score, it was all American (1-2-0) as the Eagles outshot Howard (0-1-1), 20-3 in the game, including 9-3 in shots on goal.
The game-winner came off the foot of junior Lindsay Muri in the 31st minute of the first period. She was set up by sophomore Kelly Donovan who registered her first assist of the season, which was just her first game of the year.
Muri was all over the field offensively for AU, tallying five shots, four on goal. Midfielder Michaela Cowgill was second in the game with four shots and was one of six Eagles with at least one shot on goal.
The American defense held Howard to just one shot in the second half while juniors Charlene Belanger and Sarah Dejak split the game in net, with Belanger making two saves and Dejak one.
The Eagles return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m., contest at Liberty.
