Lacrosse's Win Streak Snapped by #11 Virginia

The American University lacrosse team had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 16-4 loss to No. 11 Virginia on Tuesday afternoon at Jacobs Field.

American (5-7, 3-0 PL) faced a 9-0 deficit at the end of the first half as the Cavaliers held an advantage in nearly every category. Virginia was able to hold onto the ball through most of the period, coming up with nine draw controls compared to one for the Eagles. The Cavaliers held a 20-3 edge in shots, with Teal Harrison coming up with six saves in the first half.

Virginia (7-6, 0-4 ACC) added two more to open the second half for the 11-0 advantage before Jordan Harrington put American on the board with 20:59 remaining in the game. The Cavaliers responded with three more to take the 14-1 lead with 13:04 to play. Kimberly Collins extended her scoring streak to 35, finding the back of the net on an unassisted tally. Collins completed the hat trick with back-to-back goals just two minutes apart before Virginia's Christie Donovan closed out the scoring with a goal at the 2:11 mark for the 16-4 final score.

Collins finished the day with four points, also adding the assist on Harrington's goal, while Laura Dawson collected four ground balls. Harrison posted nine saves between the pipes for the Eagles.

Nine different players scored for the Cavaliers. Morgan Stephens led the team with three goals. Courtney Swan notched six draw controls and Lelan Bailey collected three ground balls. Liz Colgan made three stops as the starting goalkeeper.

Virginia held a 32-10 advantage in shots, 13-11 edge in ground balls collected and 18-4 advantage in draw controls for the game.

American will look to get back on track when it travels to Lehigh on Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m. to take on the Mountain Hawks. The Eagles can clinch a spot in the 2013 Patriot League Tournament with a win on Sunday. American returns to Jacobs Field on Tuesday, April 9 to host Towson at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
