Volleyball Sweeps Loyola (Md.) in Conference Home Opener; Watch Highlights

The American University volleyball team extended its win streak to seven on Wednesday night, picking up its third straight Patriot League sweep with a 3-0 win over Loyola (Md.) in its conference home opener.

American (17-1, 3-0) pulled away early, taking a 9-5 lead on a kill by Bree Scarbrough as the Greyhounds called its first timeout of the set. The Eagles continued to roll, using a 6-1 run to go up 15-7 and forcing Loyola to call its final timeout of the set. American went up 10 on back-to-back kills from Morgan Hendrix before the Greyhounds responded to cut the advantage to five, 20-15, on a block by Simone Reid and Jac Bullock. The Eagles were able to hold off a rally, closing out the set with a 25-18 win.

The second set was tied six times before American tallied four straight points for the 12-8 lead as Loyola (4-11, 1-2) called a timeout. The Eagles continued its momentum, taking an 18-9 lead on a block by Kristyna Lindovska and went up 21-11 on a block by Allison Cappellino and Kelly McCaddin with the Greyhounds taking its second timeout. A kill from Faye Lukas made it a nine-point match but the Eagles notched four straight tallies with consecutive aces by Cappellino for the 25-12 win and 2-0 match advantage.

American jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set and held off a Greyhounds' rally, going up 18-10 on an ace by Megan Rosburg. Loyola battled back, cutting it to a nine-point game, 22-14, on a kill by Lukas and prevented match point with three straight tallies. But the Eagles secured the sweep with a kill by Monika Smidova for the 25-16 victory.

Lindovska and Juliana Crum led the American attack in the match, with Lindovska registering a team-high 11 kills and Crum adding 10 while hitting .714. Smidova tallied 35 assists and seven digs with Rosburg posting a team-best nine digs and three aces. Hendrix finished with four blocks on the night. The Eagles outhit Loyola, .481 to .162, in the match.

Lukas led the Greyhounds with 10 kills and Lauren Andersen had 18 assists. Andersen and Micah Duzey finished with seven digs apiece.

American continues its homestand with a pair of weekend match-ups. The Eagles host Holy Cross on Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m. and take on Army on Saturday, October 5 at 4 p.m. in Bender Arena. Both matches will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
