Volleyball Sweeps Navy to Close Out First Half of PL Play

The American University volleyball team reached the midpoint of Patriot League action with its 14th sweep of the year, downing Navy, 3-0, on Friday night in Annapolis, Md. 

American (21-2, 7-1) took a 5-1 advantage early in the match before the Midshipmen battled back with four straight tallies to knot it up. The Eagles answered with a 9-3 run, taking a 14-8 lead on back-to-back errors by Navy as the Midshipmen called a timeout. Navy came out of the break with kills from Alex Karika and Gaby Smith, but American pulled away and closed out the set on an 11-2 run for the 25-12 victory.

The Eagles continued to roll, going up 10-3 before the Midshipmen called a timeout to stop American's momentum. Navy posted four straight points to cut its deficit to six and added four more to cut the Eagles' lead to 18-14. After an American timeout the Eagles went up 22-16 on a block by Morgan Hendrix and Kristyna Lindovska. The Midshipmen were able to fight back again, notching three straight tallies to cut American's lead to 22-19. Consecutive kills by Allison Cappellino put the Eagles within set point, but an Alex Cassel kill held off the win to put the score at 24-20. American was able to go up 2-0 in the match after a service error by Star Steele secured the 25-20 victory. 

Navy (8-11, 4-4) battled back and forth to open the third set, but the Eagles posted six straight tallies to take a 14-5 lead. The Midshipmen fought within 10 twice but American continued to dominate, picking up a 25-12 win and hitting .533 in the set with no errors to secure the sweep.

Cappellino led the Eagles with a double-double in the match, registering 12 kills with 13 digs and hitting .455. Kelly McCaddin hit a team-best .625, recording 10 kills with no errors. McCaddin also led American with five blocks. Monika Smidova notched 31 assists and Megan Rosburg added 10 digs and three aces. The Eagles outhit Navy, .411 to .103, for the match. 

Erin Fortner and Katie Sylakowski tallied eight kills apiece to lead the Midshipmen. Steele posted 15 assists and Alli Graf had 15 digs and two aces.

American opens the second half of its league slate on Friday, October 25 when it travels to Baltimore, Md. to take on Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m.
