Box Score
The American University women's soccer team had a number of
chances, but couldn't hold off the Virginia Commonwealth attack as
they fell, 1-0, on Friday afternoon.
"I'm proud of the way we played against a very good VCU team,"
said Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "I thought we limited
their chances and unfortunately gave away a goal off a long free
kick late in the half. We moved the ball better in the second half
and I am confident we can turn things around. Our back four led by
Hannah
Tatro and Kirsten
Eriksen were again fantastic."
Klare
Lazor made a number of saves early for American
(1-5-1), with the Rams' offense recording three shots in the first
six minutes. American had its first opportunity in the 16th minute,
when Michaela
Cowgill sent a shot over the post. Carleigh
Morba came into the game and instantly pressured the
Virginia Commonwealth defense, charging down the field and sending
a shot straight at goalkeeper Kristin Carden.
Virginia Commonwealth (2-2-2) found the back net in the 44th
minute as Wendy Acosta headed the ball into the top right corner
off a cross from Lauryn Hutchinson for the 1-0 advantage.
The two teams played evenly in the second half, with the Rams
registering six shots as Sam
Trotta and Morba's attempts at equalizers went
wide.
The Rams outshot American by a 14-6 margin in the game. Lazor
recorded four saves for the Eagles.
American returns to Reeves Field on Sunday, September 9 to host
