The American University volleyball team went back-and-forth with
Lehigh before falling to the Mountain Hawks, 3-2, in Saturday's
match.
American (9-7, 2-2) was behind 7-4 early in the first set before
coming back to take a four point lead with a kill Kristyna
Lindovska. The Mountain Hawks tied it at 19 apiece and
were able to hold off American's rally, outscoring the Eagles by a
5-1 margin to take the first set, 25-21.
The Eagles faced a 6-3 deficit to open the set before tying it
at nine with a block from Morgan
Hendrix and Kelly
McCaddin. Lehigh was able to take a 22-19 lead but
American responded with back-to-back kills from Hendrix to cut the
lead to one. An ace from Kylann
Scheidt tied the match at 22 and the Eagles tallied
three straight points for the 25-22 victory to tie the match.
Lehigh (5-8, 2-2) tied the third set at five after the Eagles
took an early lead and were able to respond with a 5-1 run for the
10-6 lead on a kill from Kaylynn Genemaras. The Mountain Hawks
added six consecutive points before American was able to cut the
advantage to five, 20-15, as Sara
Rishell notched the kill. But Lehigh was able to hold
off an Eagles' rally as they took the third set, 25-17, and a 2-1
match lead.
American opened the fourth set with five straight points,
forcing the Mountain Hawks to call the timeout. The Eagles took a
10-2 lead with a kill from Rebecca
Heath before Lehigh chipped away at the lead to cut it
to one, 18-17, on a kill from Amanda Clark. American tallied
five consecutive points for a 24-18 advantage before the Mountain
Hawks registered back-to-back kills. The Eagles were able to put
away the set, 25-20, and tie the match with an attack error by
Lehigh.
The fifth set was tied six times with five lead changes before
the Mountain Hawks were able to add three consecutive points for a
12-9 lead. Back-to-back kills from Rishell and Heath put the score
at 14-12 and a block from Lindovska and Hendrix brought American
within one, but Lehigh was able to take the match with a kill from
Taylor Poole for the 15-13 score in the final set.
Scheidt had a double-double for the Eagles, registering 45
assists and 10 digs in the match while also contributing six
blocks. Rishell had a team-high 14 kills while Bree
Scarbrough hit a team-best .381 in the match, notching
10 kills and adding three service aces. Allison
Cappellino tallied 15 digs for the defense. Hendrix
led the Eagles with seven blocks.
Dana Raber led the Mountain Hawks with a double-double,
registering 27 assists and 10 digs. Genemaras recorded a
team-high 15 kills, hitting .312 in the match, to lead Lehigh as it
outhit American, .159 to .120.
American will travel to Morgan State on Wednesday, October 3
before returning to Bender Arena on Friday, October 5 to host the
Navy Midshipmen at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision
TV.
