The American University women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead early in the first half, but was unable to hold onto it in Tuesday's 1-1 double-overtime draw with George Washington.

"We started well and did a lot of good things offensively," said Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "I liked the way we moved the ball and it is great to see Erin score in her second consecutive game. In addition, we got great contributions from players coming off the bench including MacKenzie Kerrigan and Carleigh Morba. These were tough conditions and it was tough playing on a different surface, so we'll take the tie and move on."

Erin Mulhern tallied the strike for American (2-6-2) in the 13th minute. The Eagles were able to take advantage of a loose ball in front of the goal, with Sam Trotta tapping it to Mulhern who was able to put it past goalkeeper Nicole Fasano for the 1-0 lead.

George Washington (3-4-1) added the equalizer in the 60th minute when Molly Bruh tallied her first goal off the season on a penalty kick.

American had an opportunity for the game-winner in the 76th minute, but Jasmine Mohandesi's shot was saved by Fasano to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime. The Eagles had a corner kick in the 97th minute of the first overtime period, but Trotta's shot went over the crossbar. The Colonials tried to end the game in the closing minutes of the second overtime, but Jane Wallis's shot was saved by Charlene Belanger and Meg Murphy's attempt went wide.

The Eagles held a 17-14 advantage in shots in the game, while Belanger notched six saves starting in goal.

American will play its final non-conference game before beginning Patriot League play on Saturday, September 22 when it travels to Richmond, with the match set to begin at 7 p.m.
